Anyone know more about Swim the Loop:
http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventI...

Is this it's inaugural year? Is this something locals often do? More importantly, how challenging are the currents? It looks to start at high/slack tide, but 3.5 miles is a long way and clearly an outgoing tide will come into play.

I am contemplating signing up, using it as of my training for B2B.

Hi Jeff,

Looks interesting if you like to swim and aren't afraid of sharks too much. lol.

Anyway, I think this event would be overkill for training for the B2B swim. If you want to do it, go for it, it does look fun and challenging. Just keep in mind that B2B swim is with a current, and is more like only swimming 3/4 of the iron distance swim. The year I did it, I could have floated on my back and finished within the cutoff time. I know some years it's not so easy, but most years it's "easy" for an Iron swim.

There's also pier2pier... http://www.pier-2-pier.com/

Good luck!!!

Hey Carol and japarker24 - thanks both, and I agree with assessment. I am putting this on the future list, but not for this year. The Pier 2 Pier is also going to go on that list too

I am in, my coach is starting the race, and she is top shelf. So the event will be a good one. Yes this is a loop a lot of the locals do for training. It might be over kill for B2B but that's not a bad thing if the race seems easier. Plus training in that water in a wetsuit not having to worry about boat traffic is great training.

I have done B2B 2x once an easy swim and once a not so easy swim.

I have swum the loop multiple times and the times and the currents will be spot on for an easy 2.8 miles. The last .6 of a mile from the Seapath Marina will be a little more challenging, but not hard, especially if you stay wide of the turns so you dont get the current against you, and hug the north side of Motts channel.

As for a warm up to B2B it would be perfect.

As for sharks, been swimming the channel for years and never have seen one.

For the B2B swimmers even if you don't swim this race it is very important to get a practice swim in preferably 2.

The turn back into the channel the last quarter of the swim course is tricky.

Once you make your only required turn Bouy, you want to sight on the green channel markers always keeping them just left of you, this will give you the strongest helping current and you want to angle the swim,  from approximately 7-1 on a clock face.

I saw tons of folks swimming in straight rectangular lines instead of diagonally during this portion of the swim. Costing time, distance and energy

If you are going to swim the loop PM me and I'll be glad to show you the tricky section, I will be staying just a few blocks away.

Great race, very organized , very safe, I bet there was about  a 1-1 ration of swimmers to safety folks. Everyone from the US Coast Guard to SUP and Kayakers were tremendous.

I loved the course and after the race it was a great party free beer and good food. Lot's of fun.

Not a very good swimmer I made history in this inaugural event. I was the last offical finisher 2:53

Now I need a nap before dinner...lol
