Pre-race routine:

I wasnt really planning to do this race, but decided to give it a try and signed up a few days before. I was using this more as a workout in prep for AG Nationals. So I went into this race fairly fatigued.

Woke up at 5am, took a quick shower, ate some instant oatmeal, yogurt and a coffee. Headed out around 5:50. Arrived around 6:30. Picked up packet, set up transition area.

This was a non-wetsuit race (Water temp was 79.5).

Ate a banana and a gel before heading over to swim area.
Event warmup:

Quick swim to buoy and back. Water was warm. Wasnt too bad swimming in my one piece tri suit.
Swim
  • 08m 22s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the 2nd wave. Tried to position myself close to the front, but it was hard to get a good spot. Off to a good start, but lots of traffic early on. Already passing a few floaters within first 50 yards from the first wave. It was a very narrow lane to et to first buoy and had to swim around lots of people.

My form wasnt the best in this race, but overall I was happy with my results.
What would you do differently?:

not much. Try to get better position at start.
Transition 1
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Since I wasnt wearing a wetsuit, it was a quick transition. You had to run up long rocky road to get to mount line which was a little hard in bare feet. Had shoes attached to bike and was able to hop on quickly and get up to speed.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Bike
  • 40m 16s
  • 14.7 miles
  • 21.90 mile/hr
Comments:

There were 2 speed bumps early on the ride. Water bottle launched off my torpedo mount at the first one. Oh well, looks like I will have to go without hydration. Glad it wasn't super hot. Legs felt stiff early on and never really got into a good rhythm.

I knew 1 person in my AG (Mark) was ahead of me and was able to pass him right before construction area (gravel road). I couldnt remember what the rules were for this area and if we could cross over to the other side of the road. I choose to stay on the right side, but the person in my AG quickly passed me on the other side. Riding on the gravel side really slowed me down.

What would you do differently?:

Since this was not an "A" race, not much. It would have helped to drive the course before hand and understand rules for construction area.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Good Transition for me. Hoped off bike, ran down rocky road to transition area and had helmet off and shoes on quickly. Took a quick swig of HEED bottle I had in transition before heading out. Put race belt on while running.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Run
  • 20m 47s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

First half mile was hard. Looked at pace at first mile and saw I was going faster than I thought despite how I felt. I saw Mark from my AG around 50 yards ahead of me and tried to hold on as long as I could. I had to really push hard to stay.

Course had lots of turns and sections thru parking lots. I was really starting to get hot and thirsty. Took a quick swig from first station and duped rest on my back and head.

What would you do differently?:

Run more.
Post race
Warm down:

drank water and Gatorade. Talked with a few friends. Ate an egg burrito and a yogurt. drank more water. hung around for award ceremony. nicely done.

Event comments:

Overall this was a fun race and I will do it again.
