Subject: Two Tri's In Two Weeks w/ One week of Training

So I started triathlon training (officially) about a week ago, and looked up some tri's to train for. I found one on Sep. 9th, and really wanted to do it so I know what it would be like, in preparation for another sprint triathlon on Sep. 22nd that I am doing with a friend. The problems are:

1. As of now I have only trained one week

2. I haven't swam in about 6 months

3. The day before the tri on the 9th, I have a 5k run race on the 8th

4. The very next day would be my first triathlon

5. The weekend after that, the 15th, I have anotther 5k race

6. And then on the 22nd, I would have my second triathlon

7. Both of these triathlons have open water swims, and I have never competed in open water before

I have never done a triathlon before so I don't know how easy this will be, but any advice? Thanks

head out to the open water for practice. if that goes well do it and then share your experiences.  if at any point you don't feel safe in the swim, bail.  a week is more than enough time to recover from a sprint distance.

from your user name im guessing you run XC and have a good running base.  meaning you should be able to complete each race no problem.

any reason you are in a rush to do a race with basically no prep ?

Ok, so let's assume you can indeed swim 850m right now (as a previous competitive swimmer, I think you might), you really need to get in open water, it's very different. Also, the tri swim start can be mayhem, so you need to be mentally prepared to get swam over, hit, kicked, etc. Worrying about the distance and the OWS at this point can cause panic.

What about running and cycling? What's your experience in those two sports?

Unless you are fit, a 5k the day before a sprint tri is really suboptimal... if you're competitive, then you're probably going pretty hard in the 5k, and starting off a tri with achy legs is not good...

Yeah I heard that open water swims can be rough, and I'm going to be at a lake for the next few days so I will practice open water then.. As of my experience in cycling, almost none besides the one time I did the cycling leg in a group tri and got a 24 min 10 mile.. From what I've read that seems to be pretty bad, but I think i will be set for the running.

And the reason I'm doing the races with almost no prep is because I want to get at least one in before the season ends, and before it gets too cold.
