Lately, I've upped my swim time in the pool.  I usually do a warmup, some kick drills, pull drills, and then a long swim.  When I do my warmup, it kinda sucks and I can only do about 200yds before I have to stop.  After the drills (presumably after I warm up) I do 1000yds no problem.  I'm not a fast swimmer, I'm only doing about 2:30/100yd pace during my long swim.  The warmup pace is probably 5-10sec faster.

What type of warmup can I do before a race to get the same results when they don't allow you into the water prior to the start.  Is it more of a heart rate thing or a muscle thing?

For most Sprints and Olympics I will run then stretch to get my heart rate up and prep myself for a fast pace race. If it's a HIM, I will stretch; the initial 200-300 yrs are pushed hard before I settle back into a comfortable stroke, this seems to work well for me.

Just go jog (towel + shoes so you don't have wet socks coming back) about a half mile down the venue in some discreet direction and hop in anyways for some quick stroke tune-ups. If you can get out of their jurisdiction, no harm done in a warmup. And if people complain its not fair... they can do it too

Admittedly I swim more than most, but my warmup has always been to swim a 1K very slowly (or 10 X 100 5 secs rest very slowly). The idea is that you warm up by slowly by moving the muscles you are going to be using. As the blood get into them you stretch out your stroke and swim a relaxed pace at a speed that is no more than the equivalent of walking at 2 mph.

What is a good interval between the end of your warmup and race start?  For example, in my next race I will start about 9 minutes after the first wave.  When I hear the first gun, is it time to head over from jogging?  How do you guys try to time it?

are they not allowing this or are you assuming this?  at every race i've done, they have allowed people into the water to warmup.  they usually clear out the water 10 to 15 minutes before race start then.
