7 | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM I signed up for my first attempt at an olympic distance at this race, because it was so interesting. I found this forum, and this topic. Made me pause for a moment. Oh well, just gotta make the best of it and hope it is well. I am not trying to win, just finish, since I did my first sprint in August, at Moss Park. Just gotta train, and the chance to ride at KSC is so awesome. Edited by chazmtb 2012-11-05 12:56 PM |

Might help to offset my lack of running ability. Mark My thoughts exactly I am in . AND it will be Pumpkins Tri debut |

Veteran 206 Hilliard, OH | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM This is going to be my first HIM! I chose it because it will be an interesting place for my husband while I am out swimming/biking/running for hours and hours! lol! I have run many races that the race director wasn't great and problems happened. I have learned to be flexible and depend only on myself to meet my needs. It just seems right to pick a race that is happening for the first time to be my first half. What I would love to know from those around the area, what is the swim like? Is there rough water there frequently or is it typically still water? Does anyone know if it is a beach start? |

Hi Michelle, Most tri's in the lagoon are wade start and pier finish, which the park has. The water conditions will depend on the wind direction, if its a strong easterly wind (highest probability in May see here) any waves will be onto the shoreline. It is brackish water (salty) so it'll have the potential to be faster than freshwater due to the buoyancy. |

It looks like some more info has been added to the website. Some of the comments about the RD concern me, but it would be uber cool to be able to ride around the shuttle launch pads at KSC. Mark

Expert 2373 Floriduh | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM I agree about the fact that no course maps, other than the run map, are posted makes me more than a little weary about Rocketman. I will add that I have done the Ron Jon tri a couple of years in a row, it is also hosted by Smooth Running. I have no problems with the event, and have had fun both times. Indeed, the number of volunteers often seems thin, the entry/exit to transition was kinda goofy, and the traffic control going through downtown Cocoa Beach is a bit iffy. However, I cannot say I have ever raced in a "perfect" race and as the entrance fees were not super steep, I have no problems with the event. With that said, the RD last year did send out an email after the race that threw the timing company under the bus, this was not very professional, IMHO. |

13 | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM Being near the Houston Space Center here in Texas, and a rabid tri-geek I signed up for this race. Now reading this thread I am a little concerned. I am even further concerned with the latest posting on the race's Facebook page and a local newspaper's article about the bike route being changed due to the permits not being granted? It sounds like the RD is blaming the wildlife officials for not granting a permit. I guess I'm a little confused by this, why didn't the RD have the permits ironed out BEFORE taking registration money?! Adding up the cost of air travel, bike shipment, rental car, lodging, food, registration, etc... this better be a well run race or I'm going to be fairly upset. |

Seems more like a tourism ad than a race site. Before I drop any money, much less $250, I want to see the course layout. I guess that means I have a "no map, no money" policy. I share the same concerns. The website says the course maps won't be posted until early 2013. That makes me suspect that they don't have all the necessary permits in place yet. I don't feel good about forking out money for an out of town race until I know for sure what I'm paying for. Mark Gee, I must be psychic... Mark

Mark This person isn't the RD, but is associated with him. As much as I love the Space Coast triathlon training scene, I really wish their racing scene could expand drama-free. It would be great to see a race actually take off at KSC, but based on the history of races by this RD, I see this working negatively toward that end. It's a shame. |

Mark The two long running local races are drama free and very competitive, the Pineapple Man Sprint (longest running tri in FL) and Battle of the Bridges (local tri club race now Oly&sprint) are the main stays. The RD of the KSC tri has been active in recent years with run and tri events with varied success. That said, I'm not doing it. |

Veteran 206 Hilliard, OH | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM This will be my first HIM. I will go into this race with little expectations. Having read the complaints of some about the RD, I will try to be prepared. I choose to take the information that people are giving and adapt my race accordingly. I will go as prepared as I can be and let my training take me all the way to the finish. What I have learned - Learn and know the course. Don't expect volunteers to direct me. Carry my own fuel/hydration. Have my own recovery food at the finish. Wear my Garmin so that I have my timing/stats. To be honest, I do these things for all my races. Remember that many of the people "working" the races are volunteers. I love and appreciate all that they do. They really are doing their best with the knowledge that they have. T-2 months and counting! |

13 | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM I'm all about support of the volunteers. But if you are going to be self supported, why are we paying the RD? What type of RD takes peoples money BEFORE having the logistics ESPECIALLY the necessary permits in order to hold the event? The fact that he has to ask a member of Congress to help get it done for him less than 2 months out is sort of scary. I mean when was the last time Congress did anything? |

I am trying to decide on what wetsuit I will use (sleeveless vs. full sleeve). Average is about 75-78F, +/- depending on pre-race climate. I'd go sleeveless. I raced in a local Oly which the lagoon was 77F and wore my sleeveless and got warm after half way to 3/4 through it. |

Member 169 | Subject: RE: New tri event 5/5/2013 on central east coast Kennedy Space Center: Sprint+, Olympic+, HIM I'm in this one. I really wish the RD had found a way to shorten the bike portion since this will be my 3rd tri and my first oly. 33 miles is a long way to ride and I stink at the bike. Wind is ALWAYS an issue out at the Cape too so I'm dreading that. Mile long swim is pretty scary too. Oh, FYI I work launch ops at Cape Canaveral so I'm very familiar with the environmental conditions. |

Cold. We've had record low temps last few days and barely to the 70's during the day. Will be changing though as climate will be swinging the other direction. Like I've stated before you have to monitor the climate the days before the race to have a good idea what the water temps will be day of the race.Access to the water? Don't know, you'll have to send the RD team an email. Course should be setup but is the area closed to boat traffic is the question. I'll ping a local triathlete FB page to see if anyone knows anything. |
