Subject: Kerrville Tri

This was mentioned on the Austin 70.3 thread.  I thought I'd start a thread to see who's doing it.

I'm moving to Austin on the 13th and figured I could do the Oly on the 29th.  It sounds like people really like the course.  The website indicated wetsuits would be a race-day decision.  I wish I knew one way or another so I didn't buy or rent one and not need it.

Not really any questions for the gang.  I just thought I'd start the thread.

Last year it was 55 degrees at race start. We were wearing our wetsuit just to keep from freezing. Course is beautiful. Ride was perfect temp and gorgeous.Run got a bit warm, but was still manageable.

WOW 55 Brrr.  That was air temp or water temp?

That's cold air, but that's really cold water.

Very cool.  Thanks!

Did the Sprint last year. It may of been 55 air, but when I jumped in the water it was really warm. Cold toes though on the bike. Doing the sprint again this year.

Ironultrared, thanks for the offer.  I would like to ride with you and Djastroman.  He is a strong biker.   I know what you mean, I really enjoyed meeting him and his wifey.

My Sunday's are tied up.   I am having a hard time getting two hours of a brick in.  I would be up for a run with you and or Gomes.

Hey Djastroman how did Michigan fare last week?  Where did the wifey go to school?

It looks like I'll make Kerrville around 830-9 am. What are the details for the course ride?

I didn't bring my helmet to work and I'm leaving straight from here.  Anyone got an extra I can borrow?

Not a bad course, i'd say about 60% smooth and 40% chipseal.  Gotta watch for some gravel on a couple of turns.  But overall pretty fast, not very many hills. one or two to keep you honest.

Yes the Oly does one lap and the Half does 2.

I'll probably just drive up the morning of.

Not a great game against the triple option of USAFA, but a win is a win!

False flats, chip seal, wind. It's very similar to Galveston in my mind. Dj - your thoughts? He registered 900 feet of gain over the two loops, once I turned on elevation correction (910 is notoriously bad on the elevation) I got 1400. The chip seal was bad enough in places that I had to ride on the pursuit bars rather than the aero bars. For one loop, there are three steep hills - two of them short and sweet, the third one a bit longer. Nothing like parmer, but just enough to raise the heart rate and give you some burn. Not MUCH shade, but a few spots did have it. Watch the gravel on a few of the corners - and we're not exaggerating. I hope they sweep the roads before hand.

The swim is nice. Personally, I'll be praying for wetsuit legal. A narrow, fairly clean river, T1 is an uphill run and my feet were pretty sandy last year - also LOTS of rocks. T2 is nice as well. The run course last year - well, this was why the race wasn't my favorite. It's an out and back, and if you're doing the half, you did it four times. There was a hill or two both directions and it wasn't completely paved. I've heard rumors they're changing the run... We'll see.

Otherwise, well run, well supported, fun race. They even had perfect weather last year.

MapMyRide shows ~725 feet of climbing, so I think its closer to that than the 1400 your Garmin showed.  It felt pretty flat to me, no real sustained climbs just a few short and sweet ones like Rachel said.  I agree on the chipseal, there were several areas where I had to get out of the aero bars because it was too much.  I'll probably just HTFU for the race though.

Here's to hoping for a wetsuit legal race!  I need it to get my 1-2 uses per year out of my wetsuit

I swim outside year around in Austin so I use my wetsuite Nov thru March.  It would be nice to have it wet suit legal.

I am trying to look at times from last year and can not find the link?

DJastroman-I looked at the times and they are on the slow side for an average Tri.  Must be a tougher course than normal.  You must just be ready to rumble.

I will be in Kerrville Sat to check in.  I will just drive in the next morning also.

I am training hard.  You better watch out for Ironultrared, she might be ready to take you.

Good luck.

We really need the  rain, but this rain is cramping my training.  I have to change my schedule to swim in an indoor pool.  I can run in the rain.  I road my trainer for 30 minutes last night.

Do you ride in the rain.

I do a lot of my workouts indoors. Drainer, dreadmill and indoor pool.  Wildcat - where do you swim?

Outdoors Deep Eddy and Zilker Park Pool (4 laps one mile).   Wetsuit in Nov-Feb. $150 yearly pass.  Also, this pass gets me free parking on weekends.  Plays and concerts. Took the family to Sound of Music in the Park and saved $5.00 bucks in parking.

Indoors-Nitro on Bee Caves.  For $50.00 bucks, 11 visits 930-300.  Only when I am too lazy to drive into Austin or Thunder and lightening.
