Yeah, I was impressed with that title .  So my question is, does freshly laid asphalt slow you down on the bike?  I was riding on asphalt that was only a day old a week ago in 90+ degree weather and I felt like I was riding really slowly.  Is there substance to my theory that the asphalt was stickier and slowed me down a bit?

Take a close look at your tires and the underside of your frame. If you're seeing small dots of tar EVERYWHERE, you probably picked them up from the fresh asphalt, confirming your theory.

Any theory I can use that doesn't involve my own personal lack of ability is fast-tracked to the top of my list.

yeah, I'd have to say it would make your ride marginally more difficult (slower) since the asphalt is probably still soft from being fresh and soft from the temperature.. probably felt a little like you didn't have enough pressure/air in your tires.

I build roads for a living here in Las Vegas, where it's 90 plus at night. Asphalt takes several hours to cool completely, by completely, I mean whatever the ambient outdoor temperature is. Having walked on freshly paved asphalt, I know it is very soft, and you would definately have to work harder to pedal through it, but after a few days, It would be the best ride in the world. When the temp get real high here (105-115+), even cured asphalt gets soft, just take a look at the intersections in las vegas in the summer where cars have been sitting on the asphalt for extended periods of time. Divots everywhere, even just to walk on it it feels spongy. Dang, I could go on forever.

Get off your bike next time, and see if it is spongy under foot. If so, it's the weather outside, not the new asphalt.

Sorry about my last post, I just felt I had to defend the asphalt, as it's what pays for my tri gear.
