See, I was much happier not knowing about the bat guano... Where was that?

(edit) Nevermind, saw your post. Eeeewww.

AFAIK the rationale for the course change was an overgrowth of vegetation in the water west of the start.

As far as bats go, the big problems would be rabies from a BITE (not exposure to guano), and histoplasmosis, but as I understand the histoplasmosis thing it's a fungus that grows in soil, so I don't think there's a big danger since it's getting diluted and washed away in the river. Histoplasma also affects people with weakened immune systems preferentially so the risk to a healthy person is fairly low, but not zero.

Still something worth bringing up to the RD in case it becomes an issue. And in the mean time, here's what to look out for.

Blach. That sounds pretty gross. I hope nobody gets legitimately sick (as opposed to the dozens who are sure to get placebo sick).

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't the water move pretty steadily in Austin lake?

Still gross. Sorry bout that one.

I forgot to hit start for about 150m, but even so I had 0.95mi of swimming, and didn't veer too badly at any point. I think the swim was a little long.

My Garmin shows 2.09 miles on the swim and with 31:24 on the swim I averaged 4 miles an hour!  Needless to say that my Garmin is not really accurate on the swim.  My swim time for the CapTex olympic in May was 28:36.  My swim was about the same in very similar conditions.  Thus, I would suggest that the course was a little long.  I guess that when they changed the course by moving the turn buoys to the other side of Congress Avenue bridge (and leaving the upstream buoys at the previously marked sprint course), they had to stretch it a little to avoid the turn happening right under the bridge.  I would not be surprised if it were 150m longer than a mile.

I was about 2min faster at captex as well.I guess that one could have been short. The run was short at captex. I'm sure of that.
