Beginners - heed my advice:  GO!GO!GO!

To be fair, part of the reason I haven't gone is that my schedule wouldn't have allowed it until now, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten around to it anyway.

I was intimidated to go to be in the slow lane, I may have actually been scared for the group to be waiting on the slow guy (gasp!).  I'm 2:00/100m for all day and wasn't quite sure what to expect.

I'm an extrovert so don't have a hard time meeting people or being in a new group, but when my lack of athleticism is going to be on full display, I tend to be at least a little reluctant to get into a new group - put me alone in the pool or track, and I can deal with slow or bad form, or whatever.

I went for the first time today and everyone was very welcoming and really more concerned about their workout than how slow I was going to be

It was extremely helpful to have someone right there giving real time feedback on my stroke, kick, breathing etc.  I may not see my times coming down immediately, but I can tell this is going to help a great deal.

A few things got me to the decision:

  • Recent financial changes caused me to drop my coach, which was long distance, so no more workouts nicely showing up in the inbox
  • Recent financial changes opened up more time in the morning - my wife just quit her job to start her own business so she takes our daughter to school in the mornings
  • After reading TheClaaw's recent post, I decided to be more concerned about why I was doing this than worry about being the slow guy

It was a lot of fun, and pretty tough, but the coach very quickly saw some holes in my technique that are easily corrected without the stroke overhaul that I was afraid of.

If you've been putting this off, and if your schedule and finances allow (this is free at my gym), I highly encourage you to call the person in charge, ask a few questions, and show up.

I hope this little missive encourages someone to call their masters group today to start improving - the only thing you have to lose is time off your race.

Have a good Tuesday,

twomarks

I'm looking for the jealous button.  I don't have access to a masters program.  Closest group is more than an hour away.

So true!! I hate hate hate swimming solo...and the funny thing is I really like swimming!  Why? b/c I love my groups.  And I have 3 different ones I swim with depending on the season, but I just love the groups.  It is well worth having the group to motivate you, and if you have a good program, you can find a place to fit in. My place is leading one of the slowish lanes.

As corny as this is, the people are often the best part.

I've made some good friends, riding buddies, training partners and resource connections all through masters swimming.

THANK YOU for posting!  I thought I was the only one.  Closest Masters to me is 85km away.  I have considered, however, maybe doing it once a month or something.

Masters swimming is the best thing I've ever done for my time in the water. Great people, fun, tough, learn LOTS, and you get to see hot tri chicks in swimsuits 3 times a week. An all around winner!!!

Ya closest masters swim is 100 miles away, each way, like in the next state, not gona work. I really wish I had access to some coaching or masters swim.

I just joined a Masters group last Thursday that is a little over 40 miles away from my house.  It takes about an hour to get there with consideration to traffic lights.  The coach is on deck from 5:00-7:00 AM so I get there when it opens and I'm back at my desk by 7:30 (it's about 35 minutes to my work from the pool).  Our coach has taught me some drills that I can work on by myself since I am only going to go twice a week.  I hope that it helps because I really don't like missing out on sleep!

Interesting about the swim drills. My coach told me to not do drills unless someone is watching from the deck to provide feedback, otherwise you could be ingraining incorrect form, etc.

I agree that Master's swimming can be a great way to improve swimming - I was on a Master's team for my first triathlon season. I actually joined it before I decided to do triathlon. My program was great (Cambridge Masters - swims at Harvard!), but I eventually stopped going. Why?

Too expensive, really.  $700 a year is the price of a gym membership, and I'd be paying for high level 90 minute workouts which I couldn't do anyway.  I'm sure the former Division 1 collegiate swimmers who swim 5000 yds/day get a great value out of it, but it wasn't a great fit for me.  No other Master's programs in the area work for me, though I'm open to suggestions.

Maybe I'll come back there some day, but for now I have to focus on my run and bike.

It has been two weeks since my last masters class since my pool has been closed for cleaning and maintenance.  I didn't think I was going to be able to make class today because of other commitments, but things change and I am glad I keep my swimming stuff in the car.  I'm really looking forward to swimming today!

With two or three days a week (less than I devote to running or biking) I have made considerable improvement in speed.  Even though I haven't done any OWS practices or any long distance swim practices, I have PRed recent 750m and 1500m tri swims.

If masters classes are available in your area, they are definitely worth looking into.

Hmmmm....

Well, she didn't tell me to do drills on my own, but I assumed that I could.  I guess I'll ask in the morning.  Specifically, so far I have been doing the fingertip drag and the six kick switch.

EDIT: Oops.... I meant to quote Mike D.

Thanks for this post! I've been thinking about signing up for masters swim for the fall and winter, but I've been concerned that I'd be slowing everyone else down. Sounds like it would be really beneficial though!

Wow, I'd love to see a free masters team included at our gym. I belong to the Y which has a good pool, and monthly membership fees are reduced according to income.

But not the swim team... that's $250/year, plus mandatory US swimming membership, plus plus etc etc , so well over $300... pretty close to what I pay for the gym membership (of which I only use the pool in the first place).

Maybe that would be tolerable if their schedule would accommodate people who work for a living, but practices that go until 930. I guess they're shooting for the retired crowd.
