Subaru Western Triathlon Series
24C / 75F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 41s
Overall Rank = 51/305
Age Group = M2529
Age Group Rank = 6/21
Pre-race routine:

Loads of stretching the night before. Probably half an hour. Had a bowl of bolognese and a pint for dinner and two litres of water. Got all bags etc. ready in the hotel that evening. Filled water bottles and mixed in some electrolyte. Left in fridge for the morning.

Breakfast was cereal from the coffee pot, no cutlery! Chocolate milk and a banana. Some water and a bit of a protein bar. Could have done with more water!
Event warmup:

Lots of stretching on the beach. Did about 100m in the water to get used to the cold. Not that much of an issue.
Swim
  • 07m 52s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

Really good swim, close to my target of 7:30. Found the wetsuit very restrictive and the cold water numbed my lips which made it hard to stop water coming in. Breathing was terrible, every second stroke. Navigation was great as there was a kayaker to follow and the buoys were easy to spot.
Got to the front at the start (which I thought was very biased) which made it easier to get away cleanly.
What would you do differently?:

Get better goggle with a better field of view. Perhaps anticipate problems with sun shining off the water. Try and get into a proper breathing rhythm. Use a sleeveless wetsuit next time. Suit was good to keep legs buoyant.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Tough transition, out of water and had to run up a big hill to get to bike. Walked a lot of it but had a quick changeover at the bike and got out ok.
What would you do differently?:

Have a towel to dry the feet!
Bike
  • 44m 48s
  • 25 kms
  • 33.48 km/hr
Comments:

Slow to get going on the bike. Found downhills great, but felt very sluggish on the hills. Discovered the handlebars weren't aligned with my wheels. Not good!! Thought my electrolyte mix was a bit too strong.
What would you do differently?:

Try to remember to push harder. Don't think I pushed to what I was capable of.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Didn't see transition/dismount line until it was too late. Only got one foot out of the shoe. Good otherwise. Had drink of water in T2, could have drank a bit more.
What would you do differently?:

Watch more closely for the transition approaching.
Run
  • 25m 19s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 04s  min/km
Comments:

Much better than the previous triathlon. Improved pace significantly. Perhaps due to different electrolytes drank.
What would you do differently?:

As with bike, felt I could have pushed a bit more. Need to figure out how to remind myself during race.
Post race
Warm down:

Consuming multiple cold beers and burgers. Also a few stretches

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mind, needed to push myself more.

Event comments:

Excellent race. Absolutely fabulous scenery. The whole event seemed well run apart from the shuttle bus to T2 on Friday evening. Had to bum a lift off some random participant.
