Expert 1113 Las Vegas | Subject: RE: Funny things you say to kids tmwelshy - 2006-06-15 2:58 PM My daughter (4 at the time), in her nightly attempt to draw me into conversation to avoid going to bed, asks with wide, sad eyes: "Daddy, am I going to die?" "Yes. Now go to sleep." What is it with kids and not wanting to go to bed. My daughter plays and plays, and as soon as it is bed time, all of a sudden something is wrong with her head, her leg, her arm. Once that is handled (usually by childrens asprin, i.e. chocolate jimmies) she gets thirsty, not once but 3 or 4 times within a 15 min period. Ah the wonder of parenthood. |

Elite 3650 Laurium, MI | Subject: RE: Funny things you say to kids ahhh yes. Sounds like my childhood. My mom always told me "there are no monsters under your bed, they're in your closet." I also got the, "if you are so bored, then go cut the grass" and I was eternally being threatened that I was going to be given away. Even went so far so the "call" child services to come pick me up. |

Even went so far so the "call" child services to come pick me up. OMG, one time when I was younger, I was baby-sitting and the 5 year old was being so bad that I told her I was going to call the cops on her. Well, that little plan backfired because she got so upset/scared at the idea of the cops coming to get her that she ran out of her room, out the front door, and down the street. I had to get the other siblings and form a search party for her...I was TERRIFIED!!!! I can't even remember where her brother ended up finding her...it was a few blocks away. I hadn't followed her out of the room, b/c I thought she was only going to go to the living room or something to get away from me...I had no idea how much that would have scared her. I don't think I could ever use that on my kids - it scarred me for life! She was a bad kid, though. On occasion, her mom would call and say, "Lauren, the whole family is going out to dinner in like 10 minutes, but we don't want to take Michelle because she's being so bad; can you can watch her while we go out?" They didn't pay me enough for her! |

Veteran 147 | Subject: RE: Funny things you say to kids Reading these responses makes me feel so much better! Still, I feel a little guilty for saying this to my older children when they were acting out, "I'm going to take you to KinderKare and let someone who doesn't love you raise you." (This is not meant as a criticism of child care. ) |

That reminds me... different kids reacts differently to the same remarks from adults. My mom use the same method to raise both me and my brother. eg. when we got messages from teachers with negative comments (forgot stuff, handed in homework late, played rough etc), my mom would threaten to refuse to sign at the parent's response slip, so that the teacher would punish me more. Well, that's my mom's reasoning anyways. Everytime I got a negative comment, I would suck it up, go up to my mom an d beg her to sign it, got scolded and done. But my brother was so terrified that mom would really refuse to sign and leads to more punishment, once he actually forged her signature - more serious consequence. My brother and I have very different personalities. I kept reminding my mom of this story. She still didn't get it. Always complained that we response differently when she said the same thing to us. But, we are different persons! |

Giver 18427 | Subject: RE: Funny things you say to kids This reminds me of a scene in "The Brothers McMullen" when the brothers are talking about funny things their curmudgeony dad said when they were kids. My favorite: "You shut your f*$king mouth when you're talkin' to me." Good stuff... |

My dad: When I come back in an hour, anything left on the floor goes in the garbage.Me [sullenly]: OK. Dad comes back in an hour; the floor is clean of all the things I wanted to keep. I left the garbage (crumpled papers, candy wrappers, etc) on the floor despite having a small waste basket in my room. About 4 years ago, he finally admitted that he was bizarrely proud of me for that one, but MAN was he pissed at the time... Edited by Ellie 2006-06-19 10:18 AM |

It would have been really cool if you had moved all of his crap onto your bedroom floor. But still...awesome! |

I got that a lot too. Except it was, "If you guys don't clean this up I'm giving it to good will." she evn went so far as to pull out a trash bag, bag it all up and set it on the porch. |
