Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the HoJo near Depot Park. Arrived at transition soon after it opened. Set up and returned to room. Light breakfast. Stretching.
Event warmup:

Stretching. Jogged beach to bring heart rate up. Got in the water a couple waves before mine went off to acclimate.
Swim

  • 2310 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since I switched to the Aquabike, I wasn't going at 100% effort. Just went out for a fun day. This was a decent swim. I was challenged staying on course at the end of the pier while heading for the first buoy due to currents. Not too bad though and the rest of the swim was uneventful.
Transition 1
  • 07m 27s
Comments:

Long run from beach to transition. Since this is exactly where I injured my hamstring last month, I took it cautiously.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing under the circumstances. In a race I was more serious about I would try to speed everything up.
Bike
  • 2h 55m 42s

  • 19.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Headwinds on the way out, some fairly strong. Tailwinds on the return. Since I was pretty sure I could count on a strong tailwind for the second half of the bike, I was comfortable expending a good deal of energy on the way out. It was a good choice. The ride back was terrific. Saw more flats on this race than any I've been in and was glad I wasn't one of them.
What would you do differently?:

Need to tweak my training some for more long rides and variable terrain.

Event comments:

Low key race. Everything went super smoothly. No hassle when I needed to switch from the 1/2 to the Aquabike.

Good job man, I did the HIM distance on Sunday. Halfway through the run I ran into a world of hurt. Couldn't eat/drink much and just felt like crap in my stomach. Oh well, lesson learned. It was fun regardless.

I dunno why, but I really enjoyed the swim. I was fearing it at first, but I warmed up for a bit, basically got to the point where I could have my head underwater without it feeling like it was going to freeze off and really enjoyed the actual swim.

First half of the bike was a pain for me. It was as expected with the headwind. But geez, I never have fun with headwinds. The way back almost felt like a reward.

Good luck on future races.
