I'm not sure if it's the watch or a Garmin Connect issue or a combination but my elevation charts on my last couple bike rides have gone crazy.  Tonight on my 9 mile ride, I apparently started at 28,800 ft, climbed to 41,356 ft by the turnaround and then plummeted back to sea level, where I slowly climbed back to 7,200 ft to finish....anyone else getting this insane data recently?  Doesn't seem like there has been a firmware update for a while.

Geez, what a stud you are doing all of that elevation gain in only 9 miles!!

any gps sourced elevation data is sketchy. even though this case is extreme, its pretty much always going to highly exaggerate the amount of climbing you do, due to GPS inaccuracies

910XT doesn't use GPS for elevation. It has a more accurate barometric altimeter. I think I've read somewhere (probably over on dcrainmaker.com) that if there is something blocking the barometric sensor it can give false readings. Now I've only had my 910 for a couple of days so I'm not entirely sure, but I think the sensor is the little hole next to the "mode" button. Check that out for grime / what have you.

What's strange though is it appears to be only in bike mode.  I checked the data for my runs for the past week and they all seem to be normal.  I'll check it again after the run this morning.  Coincidently, I just noticed that there is a firmware upgrade available...

Taking this down to bare nuts, this makes me think that the barometric pressure sensor is oriented in a way on the bike that it is affected by wind speed. Faster = higher pressure = lower elevation estimate, or the other way around if it reads less pressure when you go faster. Try different orientations and see if that changes things, or even better, fixes the problem.

Here in Florida and in the Bahamas and Caribbean I love watching the elevation reading change as low and high pressure systems roll through. I'll never believe barometric pressure conversions, but I will entertain myself with them.

More info:

I am sure that the elevation is supposed to be closer to 2,000 ft and not 12,000 ft. Confirmed on web posts of the exact climbs I do by other riders.

The barometric 910xt gets close to the correct elevation, but ultimately is off by about 500-900 ft. Still, that's a lot closer than the ridiculous numbers I'm getting now.

The GPS track is accurate, on Garmin connect, so I'm surprised that the elevation is so nuts.

GarminConnect was working fine 2 weeks ago for me, but just recently started going haywire. Not sure why, but I was just wondering if I was the only one having this problem.
