Was in Disney for the last week. Only had time for short early morning runs. We hit the parks as soon as the gates open, and I tell my kids that we leave when they had enough, which means we stay till close. I needed some recovery anyhow. Dealing with a chest cold now that hit me last night, have the 50 miler in a week and a half. Should feel better by then, but besides the marathon, I've really had no long runs in the last 5 weeks or so. Should be interesting.

My running streak came to and end, not even sure what day I was on.

My partner of 22 years collapsed from a heart attack a couple of weeks ago, she passed away this last Monday.

I am not certain if I will try this again or not. I have not run yet, going to try with a group I run with this Sunday.
I liked the changes this brought to my running I just don't know what anything will look like now.

Mary

I'm very sorry for your loss. Everyone grieves their own way, I find running therapeutic for most areas of my life, but I cant say that I have anything that compares. I wish you the best during this difficult time.

Awesome news about your son. Snow is fun at first but it gets old fast! Enjoy it while you can!

I am on I think day 4 or 5, I started over again. I am running the Harrisburg marathon this weekend with a friend of mine, he is hoping to get in under 4 hours which I am sure he can but not so sure I can. Although my runs lately have been real good, I have my doubts, I will try and pace him though to get him and myself in under 4 hours. I have a disease though I think, while I was injured and not running and had no idea when I might start again, I signed up for a 50k in Ohio, The First Day Of Winter 50K, with some delusional thoughts of if I sign up for a race I will naturally get better. Back to the marathon though, if all goes well Sunday and I finish this will be my 25th marathon or longer race in less than 5 years. A quarter of the way to 100.

A disease? What do you think, if you don't mind me asking?

I figured out what was going on with my knee, at least I am 98% sure. Pes anserine bursitis or tendonitis, not sure which, but with my amateur diagnosis, I've ruled out meniscus and MCL issues. Based on videos, pictures, and description of the pain its pretty much dead on with what I have. I'm pretty sure it is due to a muscle imbalance. I'll need to do some strength exercises. I generally am weaker in the hamstrings, and they are usually pretty tight, so I will start there and see what happens.

The first thing I SHOULD do is rest it, but for now I will continue streaking and see what happens.

Hope your race went well.

The race went well for me, I felt great but my friend it did not go so well for. He started having issues at mile 18 and we walked and ran our way in after that so we did not get in under 4 hours but 4:30 instead. We did not go out to fast either for a 4 hour pace, we hit the half marathon point at exactly 1:58. The disease I am talking about is my always signing up for another race, I was still hurt and not running when I signed up the 50K I am running next month. I am not streaking yet but think I will start again one day, just not sure when is all. If it works here is a photo of me and my friend crossing the finish line. Not bad air for a 52 year old man who just finished running a marathon.

So that chest cold was a bit more, but I've got it mostly under control now. Turned out to be more flu-like, with aches, and a stomach bug to go with it. Thursday I really didn't get out of bed much (except to run). Now all that is left is a bit of sinus stuffiness and a cough.

#753- 2 mi. Ran early afternoon. Stayed in bed pretty much until 1pm, slept alot, but when I was awake I wondered how I'd get the run in. I had NO energy. Luckily I had my treadmill fixed and didn't have to go outside. I ran slow and just tried to focus on the next 0.2 miles. I considered stopping at 1 mile but I said I'll go for another 0.2, which turned into another 0.2, then it was too late to stop before 2 miles. I was pretty wiped out after, went back to bed pretty much until the next day.

#754- 2 mi. Better, but felt weak and tired, probably mostly due to lack of food.

#755- 4 mi. Much better. Cold outside. Wanted to test gear for the 50 miler this weekend.

I am pretty nervous for this race this weekend. I feel woefully unprepared. This has been a rough 6 weeks. My injuries leading up to the marathon, then my recovery being less than stellar, topped with a touch of flu.

I am not fully recovered from NYC. I have bit of muscle/tendon pain in my left leg still, and the knee is still a problem. I am going to start, and I will run until I can't (with some strategic walking up hills).

I had 6 months of great training, followed by 6 weeks of problems. I am hoping that the 6 months counts alot more than the 6 weeks. I never really did what I would consider specific training for a 50 mile race. I tried hard to work trails and elevation change into my long runs during the marathon training, and kept my running in the 50-60 mpw range for much of the summer and fall. But the last 6 weeks really has worked over my confidence.

I will post over in the Ultra forum with a bit of advice, but will also appreciate any here.

#756- 4 mi. Gear check again. Cough much better today, but it was pretty bad yesterday.

Good luck with the 50 miler Rich. The only advice I can think of is to use walk breaks. If you are doing a trail run you may want to walk hills.

Run # 179

Wednesday will be my last day of running for a couple weeks. Have to go back in for sinus surgery.

Thanks for the input.

Its the JFK 50. Main trail section is the first 15.5 miles, and I plan to hike up any steep portions and generally take it easy on this section. I did a few miles on the AT this summer on a camping trip and really couldn't go too fast anyhow with all the rocks.

I will also walk the aid stations while I eat/drink. Other than that I hope to keep moving and resort to run/walk only if I have to. I'll play it by ear, this is really just for fun anyhow, I have no competitive goals. Just finish and enjoy the run.

#757- 5 easy miles

Hope your surgery goes well, and remember, when you are all healed up, you will be ready to head out into the middle of one of your lovely winters .

I am going to give this another go.  I did it for 52 days last year until I made some stupid decisions and stopped, whatever, live and learn right?

I am on day 8, hoping to break my old streak, possibly make it to 100?

Day #8 - 7.67 miles.

Rich good luck on your 50 miler. I have heard the first part of the trail is really rocky and tough to run. You have a good base built and should do well. I hope you knee holds up.

Thanks all about the finisher photo but it was done in 4:30 which is my slowest marathon to date, I was pacing my friend and this is where he was able to finish. I felt great at the end, that'll probably never happen again though so I had to take advantage of it.

Wednesday - #472 - 4 miles
Thursday - #473 - 2 miles
Friday - #474 - 2.8 miles
Saturday - #475 - 2 miles
Sunday - #476 - 2 miles
Monday - #477 - 2 miles
Tuesday - #478 - 4 miles
Wednesday - #479 - 4 miles

Friday my run was in Annapolis right next to the Naval Academy, which was really cool. Wished I could have run on campus with the plebes, but didn't have my ID with me as I was running. Went back to do the walking tour later that day which was awesome. Ran in College Park on Saturday.

Going to finally get the courage up and start doing outdoor running this year in the winter. Went to one running store yesterday looking for the Brooks Ghost Gore Tex version, but they weren't stocked yet. Checking another tonight. Probably going to buy a fat tire mountain bike to do some winter riding too.
