First official race of the year tomorrow at the Grand Rapids triathlon. Doing the sprint. We'll see how I feel. Not sure what to expect right now.

I hope your race went well today.

Day 116, 18.3 miles. Two weeks in a row over 60 miles, slowly making progress.

Sunday - #686 - 3.1 miles in the Grand Rapids Triathlon. It was raining hard in the morning, then slowed down by the time I was swimming. It was next to nothing on the bike and run. GR Tri draws a lot of people, and is pretty competitive. I was surprised to place fifth in my AG, and I'm thinking I left 4th place out on the course...I got stuck in my wetsuit in transition, and I probably held back a bit too much on the bike. My bike time was good, but I might've had another minute in me. My own fault for not doing enough speed work on the bike this year. I was surprised how good I felt on the bike, honestly. Disappointed in my swim, though. I wasn't bad, but certainly not as good as I am used to being out there. I negative split the run, which is great, but I probably had another 30 seconds out there to be had as well. My shoes got *soaked* in the rain - I had put them in a garbage bag but I must've kicked the bag open before heading down to the water, as they were just filled. My orthotic was moving or something and rubbing against my foot, and I was running with an awkward stride every 3rd or 4th step in order to try to get the orthotic back into position to stop rubbing. Oh well, I improved over last year by about a minute, but feel like there was more to be done.
Monday - #687 - 4 miles and then 1Km in the outdoor pool

Like an idiot, I'm signed up for a once a month Wednesday night triathlons. The June and July races are each 3 days after a Sunday triathlon. We'll see in a few days how recovered I am!!!

The once a month triathlons sound like a great idea actually. They will be good for conditioning, and to test your fitness for any A races. Congrats on your race. There are always seconds/minutes to be had. I don't think I'll ever have a race where I feel that I haven't left time on the course.

#967- 6.2 mi run, 3.7 mi hike treadmill
#968- 4 mi recovery
#969- 20 mi trail run, 4k elevation gain. I wanted to get 20 miles done in 4 hours (12 min/mi) but I went 5 minutes over. I had 2 bathroom breaks, lost the trail and had to jog in circles for a bit, and I HAD to stick my head under a waterfall. 10 - 12 miles of the route was tough, very rocky with approx 300 ft gain per mile, and for 2 miles or so of that I can manage a 15 min/mi if I push myself. Today there was quite a bit of running water which made the rock in that section very slick so I was even slower. So I tried to make up the time elsewhere. It was a fun challenge, but I came up a bit short.

Monday - #687 - 4 miles and then a frustrating 1Km in the pool
Tuesday - #688 - 2 miles easy
Wednesday - #689 - Wednesday night triathlon. Turned about to be another rainy night, ugh. Disappointed in my overall time, but oh well. Felt like I had a decent swim, but the bike should've been a faster pace, and my body just wasn't cooperating on the run. Granted, it's a hilly course, but I just didn't feel like I had it at all in the run. Oh well. 3.1 miles.

#974-11 mi trail
#975-6.2 mi
#976- 20 mi trail, just over 5 hours (running time), with 6100ft elevation gain
#977-4 mi

The 20 miler was a tough run. Went up and down one mountain 3 times, and another once. The mountain I did repeats on has one side that is steeper than the other, gaining 1200ft in 1.5 miles. A bit of climbing was necessary, but not too much, really slows me down though. The trail is VERY rocky. This is where I will do the bulk of my long days. Provided I can keep my ankles intact, I think running here will really prepare me. The terrain is more difficult than my race based on what I've seen of the course. Although I will have to almost 4 times the elevation, and 5 times the distance to handle.

Other things I need to keep in mind:

I need to eat on some sort of schedule.

Any sort of stops can really add to total time. I just let my watch run through any stops I had and between the refilling bottles, a few pictures, and a quick conversation with some hikers I used 14 minutes. I have to remember to move quick through aid stations and keep the sightseeing to a minimum.

Here's the elevation profile of my run, and a few pictures!

Nice job on the 20 miler and some tough looking trails. Where is this trail you are running?

Delaware water gap, around Mt. Tammany and Minsi (two small mountains 1500-1600ft or so) and along the AT a bit. I have about a 90 minute drive to get out there.

When I got to the top of Mt. Minsi I was asking two hikers if the trail ahead stayed up on a ridge or went back down and they mentioned that they had run into Scott Jurek when he came through on his record attempt. He ran through 2 days earlier, would have been fun if I could have run with him a bit. They said he had a few other runners with him.

The one picture of the "trail" is a tougher part of the Mt. Tammany ascent. The other parts are not as bad, still very rocky though. I attached images of more typical sections.. My race has 2000+ ft ascents, which is more than I have reasonable access to, but I think running in this area is adequate.

It's been a long week. Skipped a triathlon I was supposed to do this morning because I've been spending the weekend with my cat, who I have had for 14.5 years. We aren't 100% sure, but I believe he has liver failure and probably only has days left. I didn't want to be gone for 8 hours this morning and potentially not be here when he passed. Say what you will, but this little guy has been with me through everything (multiple job changes, moves, relationships, and deaths in the family). He's been a source of joy for every single day along the way, so I am sticking around for him as much as I possibly can. Ugh.
