Total Time = 1h 09m 31s
Overall Rank = 66/252
Age Group = Clydesdales
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

Up early (1am) with horrible nightmares. Laid in bed until 445 then got up and drove to race site. Ate half a bagel and a Powerbar.
Event warmup:

None other than some stretching.
Swim
  • 06m 23s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Poor swim. Seeded a little aggressively, after coming off a great swim at the Spotsylvania Sprint. Passed by 3 people.
What would you do differently?:

Not suck.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Passed lots of people, including all those that passed me in the pool. Transitions are becoming a strong point for me.
What would you do differently?:

Practice clipping into pedals more.
Bike
  • 34m 22s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Good pace, pushed hard. Bike split PR on this course. Bullsh*t drafting penalty; other cyclist passed me then got in front of me, i moved to the right (as required by VA law) at the sound of the approach of the ref's motorcycle. He did not pass me quickly, and instead stayed there long enough to hold me to the side and behind the other rider. I did not feel it safe to brake because there was another vehicle behind him. When in doubt, maintain course and speed.
What would you do differently?:

Cut off the motorcycle and attempt a pass of faster rider, uphill, on a curve, with oncoming traffic.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Good transition. Helmet off, butt on ground. Bike shoes off, socks on, running shoes on. Elastic laces worth weight in gold. Cup of water on exit.
Run
  • 24m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run for me. Overcast day made a difference. Run split PR on this course, only 1:09 off standalone 5k PR. Big sprint over last .2mi.
What would you do differently?:

GPS pace, kick it up a notch.
Post race
Event comments:

Great race for me. 4th anniversary of my father's passing, so I wanted to accomplish something. I took a first in Clydesdales, my first podium. Excited for first half iron in 1 week.

Congrats on the podium, way to rock it.

Not to rain on your otherwise awesome performance, but once passed it is your responsibility to exit the draft zone of the rider that just passed you.  No need to brake hard just let up on the pedals for 2 seconds and you've cleared the draft zone.
