Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:45. Oatmeal, banana, coffee. Left the house at 6:35. This worked out well with just enough time to get set up at the race site.

The night before the race, I taped over the vents on my bike shoes.
Event warmup:

Everyone, including myself seemed a little "off" this morning and not sure how to go about the warm up. I looked over at one woman, and she was just standing there by her bike with her hands on her head. Another guy said he seriously contemplated stopping at the pancake house on the way and calling it a day! I think it was the cold weather.

I did a short bike warm up, but it was so cold that it was more of a "cool off". It did help me decide what to wear. I also did a very short jog. Then I took my wetsuit, cap and goggles back to the car to try to stay warm until closer to race time. Transition closed around 8:40, the Olympic waves started at 9 and then the sprint women started at 9:20 and the men shortly after.
Swim
  • 11m 6s
  • 520 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got in the lake a couple minutes before they counted us off. Didn't swim a lot, but just floated in the water and took a few strokes here and there to get used to the cold. It is quite a shock at first. Especially to the face. I started to the front on the outside. This seemed to make sense for me because I sometimes tend to swim just a bit to the left. There was a LOT of contact for the first couple hundred yards, but it settled down after that. I saw a lot of people stopping and putting their heads up trying to regroup. I reminded my self to take full deep breaths and exhale completely. It was a very good strong swim all the way for me. I was 10 out of 37 women on the swim.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Had a really good run from the lake to the transition area. Passed my friend, Lori who had just finished the long course swim.

This transition was pretty good considering the long transition run and the need for more gear. Other than the normal stuff, I also put on my bright orange running jacket (with gloves already in the pockets), and socks.
What would you do differently?:

Buy toe covers
Bike
  • 36m 25s
  • 11 miles
  • 18.12 mile/hr
Comments:

So, being wet and riding 18mph in 45 degree temps kinda sucks. It was COLD. Even with my shoes taped and socks on, my feet were still freezing. I need to buy toe covers. I'll explain more when I get to the run. I got the garmin turned on and my gloves on pretty quickly, but I didn't try to put the garmin on my wrist until the ride was almost over. I drank almost all of my heed in my areo water bottle, but didn't touch my second bottle.

This bike ride was all I had. This was me with the hammer down! First race with an average over 18mph. I'm pleased.
What would you do differently?:

Toe Covers and a gel at the end of the bike ride or the very beginning of the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

All good. Helmet off, jacket off, shoes off (noticed my socks were soaking wet), running shoes on. Grabbed the race number belt and get and took off.
What would you do differently?:

No idea, but I need to do something to keep the feet warmer.
Run
  • 33m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started off feeling bad. Me feet were totally numb. It hurt to run on them. I walked a few times in the first mile and just hoped they would feel better as I got further into the run. I decided to fall back to my walk/run strategy. I walked a few of the uphills and ran the rest. For me there are times when this produces a faster result than slogging along running really slowly. I forgot I had a gel until mile 2. I should have had this sooner. I didn't stop for any water on the run, but it was cold enough I was ok. I had hoped for a better run, but it was still about 10 seconds faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to keep my feet warm. Maybe I should have kept my jacket on too. Who knows?
Post race
Warm down:

Dry clothes first, then food and fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just training. I have not pushed myself as hard this year as I had last year.

Event comments:

As much as the cold complicates things, I love this race. It's a beautiful location and a great course.

I placed 13/37 women today, was 2:31 faster overall than last year, and improved my time in every segment of the event. Can't ask for a better day than that.

I felt cold just reading your RR.   Way to go - nice improvement over last year even with those conditions.  Dry socks for the run may have helped a lot - extra time, but perhaps worth it.

Great race! Congratulations! It's sooooo hard to run on cold feet -- it's like running on stumps! Way to persevere and nab improvements across the board!

Well done, Jayne! I've yet to figure out a good way to keep my feet warm too, even with toe covers. Impressive improvement over last year when it wasn't as cold. Smart to take the extra time in T1 to bundle up. Congratulations on your podium spot!

SUPER JOB!!  I'm such a cold weather wimp you get major props for even getting out there.  Riding cold and wet is the worst. I've been known to leave my swim cap on under my bike helmet when the conditions are like yours.  Way to rock the day!!
