Total Time = 2h 23m 34s
Overall Rank = 57/560
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/84
Pre-race routine:

Wake up, drive to race while eating a banana. Set up transition, small talk with fellow competitors and friends.
Event warmup:

Stand around exercising my mouth.
Swim
  • 28m 32s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went as expected. My plan is always to go easy. I was trying to draft someone soon after the start until they came to a dead stop. Then I ran into them. I tried to draft a couple of other times but either they were going too fast or I ended up passing.
What would you do differently?:

I should put more effort into the swim. If I am not planning on going hard on the bike, I can use the time to recover after the swim. I also should try to find someone to draft when possible.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

I had a hard time finding my bike. There were no landmarks to use, and I went by my spot. Then I spent a little time putting on my arm coolers, as I plan on using them for IMAZ. They were rolled up, so I just had to put them over my wrists. It took a few extra seconds, but wasn't a big deal. I tried not to rush myself.
What would you do differently?:

Usually I find a good way to mark my transition spot like noticing a light pole nearby or something. There was nothing around. I could have put a piece of tape or something on the end of the rack to mark it.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 38s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 24.14 mile/hr
Comments:

The goal was to take it easy the whole race. In the past, I would go too hard on the bike and not have much left for the run. This race was all about pacing. My target power was high Z3 to low Z4. I hit these targets very well. With all of the u-turns, it's tougher to stay in a certain zone for too long so I did the best I could.
What would you do differently?:

I'm happy with this ride. I sat up a few times to get a drink. Ideally I would stay in aero position. I also caught my power drifting occasionally, especially on a small hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Again I took my time in transition. I wanted to methodically go through the steps since I haven't raced in a while.
Run
  • 49m 59s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I wanted to keep a steady pace and not kill myself. I felt pretty good for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more at the aid stations. I was fine for this distance, but for longer distance I would have been hurting.
Post race
Warm down:

Drink some water and eat watermelon. Then run two more laps around TTL.

Event comments:

My plan for this race was to pace myself and feel fresh afterwards. I accomplished this goal and was able to do the run loop two more times without stressing myself too much. This race was for IMAZ prep and my overall placing wasn't important. It killed me getting passed on the bike though. Most people I passed again, but there were a few that I didn't catch. The heat was also a killer and got worse as the day went on.

Overall I'm happy with how this race went.

Awesome job Tim!  It was great to see you out there and get a chance to chat before the start.  If you were "going easy" on the swim, man you are in for a great IM AZ swim.  Your bike continues to kick-butt, and now you held your run pace well for the 10K.  A complete race, and as you have not raced this year, that is just awesome.  See you in November!

Amazing bike! Strong performance for a "paced" race.
