Anderson, South Carolina

REVOLUTION3 Triathlon
Overcast
Total Time = 4h 22m
Overall Rank = 2/220
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/29
Pre-race routine:

Chris and I drove down to Anderson together to end our season with the HIM.
Swim
  • 31m 36s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim for me. Fifth in the AG out of water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Due to split T1/T2+finish locations, we had to pack all of our swim gear into labeled bags before heading out on bike. Collecting thoughts to do that was a new experience.
Bike
  • 2h 25m 44s
  • 56 miles
  • 23.06 mile/hr
Comments:

Rolling course with lots of turning. Reminded me of IMWI course.

Traffic control and course marking was superb. Hats off to Rev3.

Bike fitness was a little sub-par for this, which resulted in very sore quads coming off the bike. That made the start of the run rough.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Learn to run without socks.
Run
  • 1h 21m 11s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

I've been whittling my run times down for the last couple years and am very happy to finally hit a low 1:21 split for a HIM. I think I negatively split this run, but have yet to verify with Garmin.

Like the bike, the run was a rolling course with LOTS of turns. There was nowhere on this course to get into a rhythm. It seemed to be either up, down, or turn. The run course was changed on Saturday to make it a two-loop run instead of one. That took out the flat out-and-back section from last year. While I would have preferred the flatter course, it was nice to know exactly what was coming during the second loop.

Apart from a good split, the highlight of this was seeing Terenzo Bozzone out on the course. He was obviously running much faster than the other pro's and finished with a 1:11 split. Amazing.
Post race
Warm down:

I was 2nd OA, which moved me out of the AG, and that made my friend Chris the AG winner. We got our awards, which included free race entries, showered at the Anderson Y, grabbed some great burgers at Fudrucker's, and headed home.

Overall, it was a great trip. We spent much of Saturday watching the streaming Kona coverage on the hotel room TV. Chris is going to get a new bumper out of the trip after someone backed into him while we were driving the bike course Saturday morning.

Event comments:

Excellent race. The run+bike are rolling, so not a fast course, but nothing too steep. And everything was very clearly marked, so no confusion to worry about. Lots of volunteers made for a great day.

The split transitions at this race (T1 by the swim start, T2+finish a few miles away) made for a new set of logistics to deal with.

I've done two Rev3 races (Knoxville + Anderson) and have enjoyed both.

Nice work!

I assume that's a typo, and that you didn't throw down a 1:21 run in a 2nd OA performance ... and yet still fail to make the top 10% run splits?

Aha, that makes more sense. So double-awesome performance, then.

Great race buddy and what a way to finish the season.  I see now that dragging you out in the "cold" of October is a good strategy for me.  Laughing
