And was it worth it?  You don't need to say how much you spent..  For me as a beginner and a Clyde, it has to be my wetsuit and it was totally worth it!  I am WAY faster in it.  When I loose 60+ pounds, I'll invest in a cool bike....

Most people are going to say their bike.  But if that counts as a bunch of separate parts, then my disc is next on my list

Edit: was it worth it?  Put it this way: my yearly bike mileage is higher than my car.

Mine is my bike as well, and I think that it is totally worth it.  I haven't put anywhere near as many miles on it as I should have at this point, but without it I wouldn't be as hooked on this sport/lifestyle as I am.

Honorable mention - if I can count totalling the costs of a single race, then San Juan in March 2013 will be taking top spot as hotel alone will top the cost of my bike.... and I'll go out on a limb and say right now that Yes, it is absolutely worth it.  Even if I DNF, I'll still be on a beach, with salt water, and palm trees instead of freezing my butt off in Cleveland.

Ironman registration fee.
One of those cost more than my bike and race wheels (separately).

Amplatzer Cardiac Seal, the little patch inside my heart to keep it from leaking and having another stroke while running. It works. I've redlined it at 191 BPM. No problems. I also go faster at lower heart rates since my heart doesn't leak all over the place. I think it was about $25K installed.

Bike, although I think house rental for IM Lake Placid this summer will cost more.

If I get approval from the Mrs tonight, it will be my used (new to me) TT bike.  Otherwise it was my Specialized Road Bike.  I love that thing too.

Worth it???  When I bought that bike I was 240 pounds with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high stress.  Now, 180, perfect BP and  great cholesterol levels.

And I have an excuse to burn 3-4 hours on the weekend by myself (reliefe from the chaos of raising three kids) which has dramatically reduced my stress levels.

Yep, TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!

Well, I'd have to say it was the TiCycles Softride titanium road frame. I've bought several bikes since, but none of them have come close to what that one cost. I've raced it MANY times, but never in a TT or tri...

Bike, and was it worth it? yes, but maybe if I'd do it again I would have gotten a cheaper bike and just built it myself.

Bike answer is going to be obvious, so I'll exclude bikes.

Next most expensive thing was my powertap.  Well worth it and it has improved my training structure and desire to suffer.

After that is race wheels.  Made me marginally faster, but I also think they look really cool.  Probably not worth as much as I paid if you only consider speed gains, but worth it as far as me being happier because I have them.

IMCdA entry fee in 2009!

More expensive to sign up for the race than either my road bike ($600) or my tri bike ($500).

My HTO and TTO knee surgery (to realign my leg and move my interface with patella and tibia) with 2 plates and many titanium screws was about 30K. Was it worth it? Not sure as I'm still not able to train...hoping it gives me a few years before I need knee replacement.

For my 25th wedding anniversary my husband bought me a new bike with Zipps and a Quarq power meter....which would be the other most expensive tri thing I have bought.

I suspect doing IMC in total cost more but never added it all up with travel for 6 and all associated costs.

$3400. Felt B2, Zipp 404's, speedplays, it's gonna take a lot to pry me off this bike.

FTR: I bought it from Demerly. What a phenomenal deal.  Gives back every ride.

Apart from my bike.  SRM power meter and Zipp Wheels.  Of the two....the SRM makes more sense but the wheels are pretty damn cool too   I keep telling myself not to buy the $400 SWorks Trivent shoes but I know I will break down and buy them too!

My trip to Hawaii........

Oh wait, you said thing, not experience. I paid more for my bike this year than I paid for my first car. That was hard to wrap my head around.

My Sidi Ergo 3 shoes. They cost way more than the used roadie I'm riding right now. They'er like having Italian slippers on your feet while your riding.
