Subject: Training for early spring HIM thread?

There are a lot of "official" Ironman threads but I wish there was an HIM training thread for those of us who are doing early spring races. I'm doing my first one in March and could use the support.

Would anyone be game for something like that?

I would love to be in. I have a May HIM, and while everyone is winding down for winter, I just started an 8 week prep phase.

The next few weeks are base-building. I need to focus this fall on running. So I am going to try to run 5 to 6 times a week. And do a slow build.

I'm also having a difficult time on the weekends getting on my bike :/ It's been mostly spinner work for me so far. Hubby is working a lot and I have to steal time to get out on the bike trail. Wondering how I will be able to swing the long rides when it come closer to March.

Also wanting to do 2 workouts 4 days a week and this week it's hard to get out of bed early..lol..

I need a HTFU.

Which race are you doing?  Does your race have a thread in the Race Groups or State sub-forums?  The beginner HIM plan thread is pretty quiet now but will pick up with a flurry around the first of the year as folks start there 20 week plan for May/June races.

I'm doing an HIM in Ocala, Florida at the end of March. I looked in the  Fl. regional thread and didn't see a thread for that race there.. I know there are a few BT people doing that one.

I know there are other early spring HIM's scattered around, and thought it would be cool if those of us doing early events could have a training support thread.

Unless I find a better place, I will keep writing updates here.

that IS great!

what's your prep phase looking like so far....??
(I've got a while before training for a June half kicks in, but I'm curious!!)
& also coming back from an injury, so a gradual build-up is definitely key!

I'm doing an HIM in Ocala, Florida at the end of March.

I'm totally in.    It will be my first HIM too.  I started Fink's Iron plan for this race.  I'm doing the plan as prescribed through week 22 which has a HIM.  Meet you guys in the Beginner HIM group?

That's the one.

Right now posting in that thread seems to be a bit.. quiet and I feel weird posting updates there.

I am still looking for a few early spring half participants to compare/share discusion of training.. and boring updates with. :=)

There are only a couple of people on my race thread and that one is quiet too.. So, gonna keep comenting here for a while.

Feel free to post updates. I'd love to hear about your base training.

Just to contribute... I plan on doing my first HIM early april, so gotta get a trainer too. My plan was to focus the majority of my training on swimming. Seeing how i'm just doing it to finish, i know i can complete the bike and run, but i'm scared about the swim, so i plan on hitting the pool 3-4 times per week

I'm hoping to hear all your updates on trainer rides that'll get me outside and cycling more because i wont have muxh of an excuse except that its a bit too hot to train in the summer months. Im from canada so uou wont hear me complain about that! Bring on the next 7 months!

Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure what your former experiences with other tri's are but I've seen an overall improvement in my swimming this season due to working on my swimming technique. I don't have access to master classes, so I studied "Swim Smooth" and "Total Immersion" and found that I am more relaxed in my swim stroke. I shaved a minute of the 400's of my Sprints (I did 3 in a series). You might want to look into that.

Close to starting my 20 week program and thinking about how to fit all the hours in. I'm realizing that my biggest challenge over the coming months will be efficient time management.

Yesterday, I had an unexpected free afternoon. Instead of sitting on my butt which is what I really wanted to do, I went for a 30 mile bike ride, and followed that with 40 minutes at the pool.

It felt good to get those solid workouts in.

I will join your group. I am signed up for my first HIM, Oceanside on March 30th. Next Monday is my official start of the 20 week plan. I am still slightly undecided on doing the beginner plan or the regular 20 week plan, which is in the silver membership. I am leaning toward the regular plan even though my volume is not quite where it should be leading up to the start of the plan.

Hi Brian. It looks like we will be competing within a week of each other. Mine is March 24th in Ocala, Fl. I'm using another Half plan similar to BT's.

For my last olympic I made a lot of individual adjustments to my trainings as  I progressed. I am guessing I'll be doing the same kind of tweaking on this plan as well.

Half hearted 40 minute spinner ride this morning. Hoping to do a long run tonight.

I can already feel it's gonna be a long winter.

Might as well contribute, doing my first HIM June Boise. Plan on using Fitzgerald plan as a outline but won't follow it to ”t”. Trying barryp running plan from ST, my weakest discipline. Follow the swim and bike fairly close though.

Put in a good swim after work. I have been battling calf issues so not going to run for a few more days. Off to vote!

Happy birthday! I have the 410xt and love it, I'm sure you'll be very happy with that!

I have a training plan question for you all. My half ironman isn't for 26 weeks and I'm doing an Olympic distance in 12 weeks. Should I use an Olympic plan for the first race and then the olympic to Halif ironman plan after that, or do something for the next 6 weeks and then follow one of the 20 week half ironman plans straight through?

Just wondering how you all are structuring your training seeing as the race is in quite a few months from now.

Have you picked out an HIM plan? If you like having plans to follow, look for an Olympic that will give sufficient volume so that you can pick up the HIM after the Oly race. After sufficient recovery from the race, though.

I've done a couple early season HIMs. May and June. You can do quite well even though most everything may be indoors up to it.
