as far as them being cheap though, even if you only replace a tube once a month (being very conservative), at $6 per tube that is $72 per year compared to $6 for that same number of patches.

How many flats do you get? I think maybe your patches are failing more often than my new tubes. I have only had 3 flats while riding in my entire time on my tri bike. (I've been riding it since 2006) The rest of my 'flats' have come from the valve dying from being screwed and unscrewed so many times.

It's safe to say I flat much more often than you do.

This could be for a multitude of reasons. Tires, distance, speed, rims, road condition, temperature, etc. a lot of variables. I've actually never had a patch fail. not once. again this is why i emphasize vulcanizing patches. the patch area is as strong, likely stronger, than an un-patched area.

3 flats in 6 years is absolutely incredible.

I'm probably similar to most...  But a patch is my LAST resort.  And in fact, I probably can't use it much because I have two tubes and only 2 CO2's.

I have the sticker type, but they only last about 20 miles.  As for using them, I lick the tube (yeah, gross, but in an emergency) and clean the area with my jersey.  I also use the provided sandpaper to scrub the area.  I try to get it as clean as possible before using the sticker.

Also, when I get home, I will just replace the tube.  I also let out all the CO2 and replace with air.

ETA:  When my rides get to 4+ hours, I also throw in a 3rd tube and CO2.  Nothing worse than getting only 4 hrs of a required 6 hr ride and have to cut it short.  If I'm going to be out there that long, I want to get in my required time.

Yeah, I know. I ride with a friend who went through a stretch where he flatted every time we rode. I guess his tires were just a magnet for glass.

I'm probably due for a long stretch of multiple flats a ride in the near future.
