Subject: First flat tire - repair kit help?

So I was supposed to do 20 miles yesterday and ran over a piece of glass at 10.5.  It punched through my tire and tube and got a flat.

I pulled out the tube and put a patch on it (a sticker type).  However, when I pumped the tire past about 20 psi, the patch wouldn't hold.

What patches or repair kits do you recommend?

PS.  Thankfully my wife was home and picked me up.

I don't have any tips on patching, but that scenario is why I carry a spare tube in my bento box.

It's a lot easier to get rolling again on a known-good tube than hope that you can repair/patch one on the fly.

I've tried patches a few times and for some reason, couldn't get them to hold on road bike tubes even in the comfort of home.  I now carry a tube or two and co2.

Wow...I feel kinda dumb.  Yeah, I'll be getting a couple tubes, thanks.

^ That's basically what I carry (minus a lever + a dollar bill)

It helps (and may be necessary) to jam the dollar bill between the tube (the park tool glueless/pre glued ones have worked for me) and the tire if it pierced the tire.

The head on the ultraflate that I use will accept a threaded CO2 cartridge without the case (the clear thing, labeled 'ultraflate inflator unit'.  I find this pretty handy when trying to cram all of that stuff into a saddle pack small enough that the fashionistas don't get upset with me Laughing

During spring rides (when there's a lot more debris on the road) and/or when commuting, I'll use two old bike bottles that I've cut in half and carry two tubes, plus a good old fashioned patch kit in one of my cages - it's no fun to be stranded 10 miles from anywhere with a double flat and no means of repairing it.

definitely at least one spare tube.

In my bento box i carry

  • 3 tire levers

  • Allen wrenches

  • 2 or 3 CO2 cartridges

  • CO2 inflator

  • 1 tube for short rides, 2 tubes for long rides

  • Park Tool VP-1 Vulcanizing Patch Kit

  • Dollar bill

  • Maybe cell phone

Really it depends on the ride. If I know I will be a ways away I will bring the cell phone just in case. If it is a very long ride I will bring 3 CO2 cartridges and 2 tubes. 2 tubes don't fit in my box, so I either tape it to me somehow or put it in a bottle in one of the bottle cages, depending on how long the ride really is and whether or not there is somewhere to fill by water bottle up. I've never used a patch kit on a ride but i bring it and a dollar bill just in case. the dollar bill is to put between the tire and the patch so they wont fuse together.

I rarely buy new tubes. I will usually wrap the flat tube back up, put it in my box, and patch it when i get the chance. then it goes right back in the box to use as a backup. saves a little money when you can patch it for $0.50 compared to buying a new tube for $6. I try not to patch it on the road though, hence the reason for carrying 2 tubes.

Oh, and I put Vulcanizing in bold (the kind that comes with a tube of vulcanizing compound and patches) because I think the others a junk. That is just my opinion. I like to fix my tubes for the longer term.

Tips on the patch kit -

Don't trust the 'sticker' patches. They are notorious for failing after application.

In contrast, the normal patch kits with the separate tube of rubber cement work extremely well, and are almost failsafe. However, it can be hard to do this on the side of the road, with all the debris and dirt to get stuck in the glue etc.

I would highly recommend bringing extra tubes on the ride, and then patching tubes at home. Batch patching 4-5 tubes at once is the most time efficient since it takes only 2x as long to patch 5 tubes as it does 1.

I always carry at least one spare tube.  I used to bring back punctured tubes and patch them on my workbench, but for the last few years have just pitched them instead.  Guess I'm either lazy or the fact that I stock up on tubes whenever they're on sale at Nashbar or Perfomance Bike.   I still carry patches along when I ride, but only for the doomsday scenario if I puncture all my spare tubes.  At that point the limiting factor would be how many CO2 cartridges I have with me.

Thanks also for the patch tips.

The sticker patch was useless with all the debris getting on the tube.  Makes much more sense to swap tubes and patch at home.

And thanks for the glue and vulcanizing recommendations.

Will be much better prepared next time.

Oh and the dollar bill too - thanks!!

You can make a tire boot out of many things without sacrificing a dollar bill. A couple of pieces of rubber from an old tube, a bit of old tire cut into shape, cardboard from the box the tubes came in, random litter from the side of the road-FYI Th best are made from old tire casings

I've never had luck with patches.  Even when I was in elementary school, I'd just buy a new tube.  I suppose it would be a good idea to cram an extra CO2 cylinder in my pack in case I screw up the first one.

I only have an emergency patch kit for if multiple tubes fail.  I don't ride on patched tubes either, not worth the increased risk imo, and tubes are cheap.

I carry only one tire lever.....never, ever, had the need for another, much less three as some have said.

Just curious, why would you need more than one?

I don't know why i carry 3, i only ever use two. I guess I don't have to have 2 but it just makes it easier popping the tire off. just wedge the tire out with one, clip it to the spoke and use the other to go around the rim.

Ha!  That's how dumb I am....after all these years I never knew what that little hook was for (clip it to the spokes)....learned something, thanks.

I just wedge the tire out, go around the rim with the same one, and then use my hands for everything else.

The only thing I carry, that I haven't seen, is some folded tin foil.  If a tire gets cut, you can put the foil between the tube and the cut to keep the tube from popping out.  I was taught it by my dad and have only used it once in many years.....but it works and takes no space/weight to carry. It'll get you home in a pinch.

thats why you should use the vulcanizing patch kit. It chemically bonds the tire to the patch so you should never have a problem. the tube will fail somewhere else before it fails at the patch.

if you still feel uncomfortable riding on patched tubes, just send you old ones to me, i'll be happy to take them off your hands

as far as them being cheap though, even if you only replace a tube once a month (being very conservative), at $6 per tube that is $72 per year compared to $6 for that same number of patches.

3 levers because for some reason there is always a 50% chance it snaps upon leverage I remember a friend flatting once and he didn't have spares... Gave him my spare and my levers... He breaks one on the first go! For some reason someone else give him some levers too.. he broke one of his! I quickly scrounged my remaining levers from the ground before he went for a hat trick

Use a piece of an old race number bib instead of tin foil or a dollar.  The will not tear and make a great boot if the tire is cut.

Get the pedro's levers. I think they're even warrantied against breaking. And I've found I can get some tires with one, but some require two.

How many flats do you get? I think maybe your patches are failing more often than my new tubes. I have only had 3 flats while riding in my entire time on my tri bike. (I've been riding it since 2006) The rest of my 'flats' have come from the valve dying from being screwed and unscrewed so many times.

I don't flat much either - probably about 3-4x/yr which isn't much for how often I'm outside (it's Norcal so year-round.

I do like saving my flatted tubes for batch patching though. Have said it before, but sometimes you'll get an errant shard in the tire that is hard to find and will take out 2-3 tubes at once. Annoying (and not cheap) unless you have a patch kit - super easy fix.

I actually do accumulate tubes and do like 4-5 at a time. I usually do it once per year.

maybe i'm lucky, but i just carry the stick on patches unless it's a race.  I would say my patch success rate is >90%.  I do have trouble if they start to get old though, so i try to buy a fresh pack each year.
