I'm racing on Saturday. I have two black nails from my half in May and one just pulled loose, attached only at the base. Based on another thread in Injuries consensus is to pull it off. I just want to make sure this is the best idea given I am racing in two days. I suppose my only other option is to duct tape it down which could lead to other discomfort and blisters. Anything special I should do after I pull it off to be sure it's ok on Saturday?

Amputation. No more toe to worry about, much less a nail to worry about.

That's what I always tell my daughter when she whines that her finger or leg hurts!

I get them all the time. Wearing two socks is the only thing that has helped. I let them work their course. If it is bothering you, pull it off. If not, leave it on. I wouldn't wait until Saturday to pull it off, though

Pull it off if you can do it easily, but don't 'tear' it off.

Well, it wouldn't pull so I cut it off right at the base. It was sure to get caught on something otherwise. Cool.

yea, give 'er a good yank.  You want it off.  I had a similar incident, except mine was broken behind the cuticle from someone stomping on my foot.  I didn't remove it and ended having the new nail severely ingrow on all 3 sides.  After masive infection and 3 exceedingly painfull surgeries (local anestesia, could feel them cutting the flesh away and scraping along the bone), it's finally to the point I can tolerate it.  Still have to dig out little pieces of nail from time to time.

If you keep having issues, find shoes that are a touch longer.  From everything I've heard, the cause is the seam in the toe box catching on the lip of the nail and gently lifting it with every step.  So if you move that seam away, so it doesn't hit, or go in and trim the seam down, it won't catch and no more black nail.  The other cause is your foot smacking the front of your shoe, shoving the nail back into your toe.  You get this alot going down hill.  Again, longer shoes and make sure your laces are tight enough to keep your foot from shifting.   When I was backpacking, I even went so far as to lace (and tie) the middle third of the boot tighter then the rest, so there was more restraining force keeping my foot back, but not a lot of added tension around the rest of my foot.  Anyway....  good luck solving your problem.

My local running store suggests that you buy shoes that are big enough for your thumb to fit between the end of your toe and end of the shoe. Then they teach you how to lock lace your shoes. I've been doing it since I started running marathons and have had no problems whatsoever with the toenails. I have had problems in the past with smaller shoes.

Here's some info on lock lacing. The top version is the one I use:

The longer I run, the bigger shoes I buy. I wear a size 10 street shoe and a size 11.5 running shoe. I never have trouble with toenails anymore.

That's how I tie mine. I hadn't had problems until just this race and I got two big blood blisters under the nails. I have to have a roomy toebox anyway so I know that's not it. May have just been a freak thing. Sounds like I'll have to keep an eye on it though (vortmax) to keep if from becoming ingrown since I cut it.
