Subject: Cars with keypad entry

I am interested in getting a car with a keypad entry to unlock the doors. The only company that makes these, that I know of, is Ford.   I thought I'd ask the brain trust if there were others.  Any ideas?

I am interested in a car that doesn't require I carry my keys (i.e. open water swims, etc).  If there's another solution I am not considering, let me know!

Even if you have a keypad entry, you'll still need the keys to start the car.

My car doesn't have a key only a proximity FOB for the push button start, and push button entry.  But I still need the FOB with me.

My car - 2011 Kia Forte Koup Sx Luxury :)

I believe you can get them installed as an after-market option on any car. I looked into it a while ago for the same reasons...

But you can lock the keys in the car while you're swimmin'.

I have the house keypad locked and LOVE it! The front door and garage, as well as combination locks for the shed. I don't have to look for keys ever.

And I think you're right that Ford is the only keypad lock factory produced car. I haven't seen any others.

There are alternatives.

My wife had an alarm and remote start installed on her car. One of the options she included was a tap sensor. It is a little round module stuck to the inside of her windshield down at the bottom that has a single blue LED facing toward the window. The LED blinks slowly while the alarm is armed. By using your knuckle and tapping on the window in the specified pattern it will disarm the alarm and unlock the doors.

I can never remember what it is, something like 5 different sequences you have to do. Tap 3 times, wait, tap 6 times, wait, etc. Not terribly complicated if you use it enough to remember the sequence. But it can be installed on any car.

Just got a Ford Edge with it and love it for runs, etc.   Keys just stay in the car.  Knock on wood I never lose a fob though, I am sure they are spendy to replace

You can with your car,,,,,,,, He can't with that POS proximity key.

As the other poster said, they are available aftermarket. In the neighborhood of $250 installed.

You'll never regret having the key pad entry.

That's interesting. Who is the manufacturer and do you mind sharing what the cost is?

I've been really considering the Escape for this reason.  Good to know someone else who likes the line.  I haven't driven any of them yet, so I have no idea if I really would like the car. I'd like the Edge, but it's a bit bigger than I'd like.

Looks like they have improved it a lot since my wife got hers. Hers you have to remember the sequence of taps and such. Looks like they updated to just a 4 number combo you just enter to get in. Looks pretty sweet!

I don't know as far as cost, she had it installed before I met her. It sure came in handy when we locked ourselves out of our house once. She had a house key in the car but the car keys were locked in the house. Tap sensor worked great. Looks like this new one is even easier.

That's cool, thanks. I'd also  love a remote starter and it looks like it might be another option (or at least the company that installs this stuff has both).

Yeah they make everything from the alarm to the pager to the remote start to the tap sensor. My wife had it all installed at a local stereo shop. Pretty nice setup.

I've had my Ford Explorer for 14+ years and am looking at a new vehicle, BUT only a vehicle that I can run away from without having to carry a key. I love the keyless (keypad) entry. After a while you should change to code to ensure even usage on all the keys and not just the 4 or 5 you regularly use. 14 years of use and the keypad still works without problems.

BTW ford products, lincoln and mercury also have the keypads.

I have this on my 02 Explorer Sport Trac; I was pretty ho-hum on the key pad feature, but once I started driving it, found that this is an awesome feature!

Not only for the running and locking your keys up, but any time I'm at the vehicle and need to get in, I don't need the keys.

If you don't mind going the used route, you can get a 1989-1994 Nissan Maxima.  Hey, it might be considered a classic pretty soon.

or maybe First On Race Day....either way, I love my Explorer with the keypad for the same reason OP mentioned - lock keys in car for runs, rides, swims and never worry about losing or having to hide the key fob.

Also like the fact they never took govt bailout money.

I don't know. Maybe the return on investment wasn't great enough. Ford seems more fiscally responsible than some others and didn't want to call Obama.

I drive an 2004 F350 with keypad entry.  I didn't use it for years.  Then, I started "triing" and use it ALL the time.  I lock my keys inside and go do my thing.  When I come back , it's a quick 5 digit code and I"m in.  Love it!!!

I have a Mercury with the keypad on the door. When I can't carry my keys with me I lock them in the trunk and use the keypad code to open the doors and trunk.
