Subject: 50k training - back to back weekend long runs

Hope you ultra veterans can help.

I'm training for a 50k in late Feb (Cowtown) and am following the SC runners plan (http://www.scrunners.org/ultrasch.php).  I've run 3 marathons (2 standalone, 1 during IM).

My question is whether I could switch the Sunday run to Fridays, which would have me doing a medium long run before the main long run rather than after (I would slightly alter the rest of the week's schedule as well to have a day off on Thurs).   It seems the point of back to back long runs is to get used to running on tired legs, which it seems like would still be accomplished if the medium long run was before the main long run.

Thoughts?

TIA.

I've done it when I needed to, but i think its better to do the longer run before the medium run.  First, because if you're tempted to ever skip one you'll have the longer one done.  But secondly you'll be more tired for the second run if you do the longer run first.  You won't be nearly as tired or sore (and hence won't get the benefit) if you do the shorter one first.

You see this handled different ways in different training plans. Sometimes the longer run is first, sometimes the shorter run is first. Some plans flip-flop and call for both at different times. I really don't think it matters. If you put in the miles, you'll do fine. Change it up to whatever works best for your lifestyle and available time. The big thing to focus on is making sure you get in the key workouts.

I doubt it matters much. The most important thing for a 50k, like a marathon, is probably total volume. Second most important thing is putting in the total volume at a good pace as opposed to dragging your sorry a$$ through the runs. Third most important thing could be a lot of things, one of them may be those quality back to back runs, one of them may be over mileage runs, one of them may be more M pace runs or T Pace runs or, gasp, intervals, but who knows.

That is my theory anyways.

Regarding tired legs, once I hit 100km + weeks my legs are always tired, and I don't do any back to back long runs.
