Subject: New at all this!! Help!!
Hi, I am totally new at all this Tri talk and would like a few tips on how to get started...and motivated. I have never done a triathalon but it is one of those things I really want to try. I play hockey normally and am thinking of retiring and trying something different hence triathalon. I have the bike, and probably the motivation but have no idea where to start. Can someone pleeease point me in the right direction!! or mainly where do I start??!!

There are training plans on this web site, and I would recommend finding a local tri club.  Then waste spend as much time as possible on this web site.

Yup.  Find yourself a training plan, and get out there and Swim, Bike, and run.

JZig - 2012-12-02 1:34 AM Yup.  Find yourself a training plan, and get out there and Swim, Bike, and run.

Even without the training plan, just hit the pool, ride the bike (bike trainer if it's too cold), and get a pair of good running shoes, (I recommend asics) and hit the road.

Unless you have some kind of endurance sport background it would be a good idea to take up one of the free plans found here.  As other have suggested spend time at the pool on the bike and run.

Don't get in a rush to do speed work on the run.  Log all of your miles easy as you get ready for your first race.  Don't try to get faster for a run for a long time, just log easy miles and start small.  the impact of running can produce injuries over a longer period of time that will have you questioning how in the world it happened becaue you might not be able to pinpoint a time when something happened.

The other disciplines are alright to work out hard but make sure you have at least some base before you begin doing hard workouts.

In January look for a mentor group.  This will happen at the first of the year and some of the good groups will fill up very fast, so be on the look out on January 1.

And..........Welcome to the lifestyle!  If you are a competitve person then you need to know you are hooked already.

I think you'll find triathlon a punishing sport if you're not even motivated before you've even started it.

Assuming it's ice vs field, you're comfortable skating on frozen water. Now make sure you're competent swimming in melted ice. I just completed my first sprint a month ago as a "test" to see if I'd like to put more effort into the sport. It was fantastically fun! A big motivator for me was having someone to train "with" me. Even though he's way faster, it gave me someone to talk/brag to and have some outside accountability. Good luck getting started!
