Since it seems CoJ has turned into the DiY network!

I had a small interest years ago enough to buy a book on it and read through it, but has anyone made soap at home?

I was reminded of it in the drain thread when Lye was mentioned, a key ingredient in soap making.  Also, Tyler Durden made it - First rule of fight club, is don't talk about fight club.

No, I do know you shouldn't be picking up soap in a shower unless you are all by yourself.  Good advice, I must say.

My kids went to a "Actual working 1800's farm community thing" near us where they actually had to do work all day without electronics, or refrigerators etc..  My sons favorite thing was the hunk of soap he brought home.  I guess this doesn't really answer your question..

P.S.  If you're over 40, go ahead and pick up the soap...

Ok, we did this many years ago when I was still in school.  Since then no.  We did it as a project for something to get extra credit.  Not great stuff either if I remember right.

I dated a girl and her sister would make it and sell it. I use to buy it from her and it was actually pretty good stuff.

I always thought making soap would be cool. But I guess there is a problem with getting Lye or using lye or something.

Lye is easy enough to get. It's getting high quality fat that I learned from Fight Club.

I live in DIY land myself, but this definitely reminds me of the dream of the 1890s is alive in Portland.

My dad makes castile goats milk soap, he has the goats and everything.  They always give me 3 or 4 bars when I visit.

The only thing I did was skim through the replies to see if anyone did the Fight Club reference.  You beat me to it!

My 13 y/o son has been making and selling soap for several years.  He hits all the local fairs, festivals and farmer's market with his "homemade, all natural" soaps.  He does quite well at it.  Best sellers are peppermint, oatmeal milk and honey, and cucumber clay.

My wife made some dishwasher soap and some laundry soap. The laundry soap worked out okay, but it's kind of hard to tell. The dishwasher soap wasn't very good at all. Our dishwasher is old and crappy anyway, but all of our dishes seemed permanently dirty until I finally said I was going to buy some real dish soap.

Not quite the same kind of soap, but they were relatively easy to make.

Do you want to make soap from scratch?  Or just scent your own?  I make scented soap, but I use a soap base that I get from peakcandlesupply.com.  They make good Christmas gifts.

we did it as a chem lab in high school.  one lab group put too much lye in it and when the teacher used their soap she got minor chemical burns on her hands.  homemade soap won't lather, so if you make something and it doesn't suds up, don't worry, you still did it right.  commercial soaps have stuff added to make the lather because we have come to expect it, not because it does anything.

It will lather depending on the type(s) of oil used.  My son uses a blend of several different oils and the soap has great lathering qualities.

My wife and I started a small business last year.  We have a small goat dairy.  We started with soap making and selling raw goat milk.  We have added chevre cheese to our product list.  We use the cold soap making process.  We are on facebook at Worley Lane Farms.  PM me if you want more info.
