Any suggestions for best places to practice open water swimming near Phoenix (come summer)?  Mogollian Rim/Flagstaff fine too.  Anywhere within couple hour drive...

Around the outside of Phoenix, you can swim a few places - - Lake Pleasant (north Phx), Bartlett Lake (way North Scottsdale), or Saguaro Lake (Mesa).Lake Mary in Flagstaff would be the place to swim up northWatch this board as a some organized OWS seem to happen often. Patrick (101abp40), Todd (phxphotog), and myself braved the waters in March last year at Pleasant trying to get ready for Oceanside. With the mild winter we're having so far, might be able to get to the likes earlier this year.

Canyon lake is another popular OWS lake (far east valley). I know of people who swim year around. AZ Open Water Swimming is a Facebook page that a lot of the local swimmers use to keep in touch. See you at the lakes.

I'm doing Oceanside this March and would love to do some OWS's this winter.  I'll keep my eyes open for any group swims in the valley.

I will be back at Oceanside this year as well and likely will hit up Bartlett (Rattlesnake Cove) or Pleasant a couple weeks before.

Awesome, let's plan on getting a group out in early March.

I'm in NM but would be interested in coming to the Phoenix area for an OWS before Oceanside as well.

Not sure about water temps here. How late into the spring is a wetsuit necessary?

Wetsuits in the lake are nice all the way up to late May.  In early May the temps are fine to swim without a wetsuit, but why bother?  It is not until June that the water temps are warm enough to make swimming distance in a wetsuit too stuffy.
