Doing the HITS half distance in April - couldn't beat the $75 price for signing up early. We have a group from our tri club going down and we're renting 2 houses for the weekend. We are also doing Buffalo Springs.

We've done Austin, Galveston and Buffalo Springs. Galveston is tough if it's windy or super hot (on the run - that airport tarmac is brutal in the heat). Austin is just hilly with rough patches on roads and run course. But, it's Austin - so you should expect that. Buffalo Springs gives you all of it most years: heat, hills (one giant one to start the bike leg) and some wind. When it comes down to it to me, if you live in Texas, then you should be used to riding in the wind and on rough roads/chip seal and in the heat. I don't understand when people complain too much about that here. If you want something different, go somewhere else, because staying in Texas usually means you're going to get a few of the unpleasant things. But, that's why we train, right?

I would like to race the Kerrville race - it's an area I love to visit. Maybe I can tack that on, but not sure, as I'd like to throw a full IM in again. Mostly this year I am going to focus on non IM branded races, though. I like the prices much better.

Im thinking about Kerrville  in Oct.  Relatively flat bike.  Good flat run.  Djastroman completed it.  Did very well.    Austin is tough.  The Tall Texan in Berne is brutal.   Hills galore both bike and swim.  I can do the swim and bike but the run will get me.  I do not want to trot and walk the run.  I guess training is the key.

I can do a half Iron.  I do not think I could complete a full iron, just a different world.  Big diff.

Happy New Year.

I am planning on doing Redman 70.3 in September. It will be my first 70.3.

While it's not a HIM, I think I am going to do Dallas Athlete's "Disco X-50" in July. It'll hopefully be a good test run for a longer distance in the heat.

You should definitely do Kerrville Dwight, you already know the course!  I think you could complete a full iron as well.  Just have to wrap your head around it and train.  Easy peasy

I may be in for Galveston as well as HITS MF now if I get on my team's roster for it.  "Put me in, coach!"

I'm in the Galveston HIM.  It's in the bay, so hopefully not too choppy.  How many are wearing wetsuits?  IM website says temps average 72.

It can actually get very choppy.  They used to do the olympic race the day before the HIM and the olympic swim was cancelled in 2010 and the HIM swim the next day was pretty choppy.  I normally swim a HIM in 32-34 minutes and my 2010 swim time was like 41 minutes or something like that.

99.99% of people will wear wetsuits.  I'm not sure what crack the website smokes but I don't think it gets close to 72.  I think it has been in the upper-60's the last three years, especially the last two years since the race moved to early April.

Did Kerville last year as my first HIM, loved it! Going to do Buffalo Springs and Kerville again in 2013.
If anyone is thinking about Kerville I say do it! An amazing race, but at the same time Don't do it. I don't want it to be even more crowded.

I am doing the Tall Texan in Boerne in March for the 2nd time.  I rode it last year on my aluminum road bike and with all the hills and chipseal it was the worst bike ride I have ever been on.  I am trying it 1 more time with a new carbon tri bike and if it is still bad, I'm done with this race.  Then I am doing the Tri Tyler Half in May.  They are promoting it as the toughest half distance tri in Texas.

After that, just an olympic in October and that is it for me for the year.

I'm right on the fence on signing up for my first HIM in Austin this year.  I just finished my first marathon at Cowtown and been doing a handful of sprints every year for the last 3 or so.  Due to work and life schedules (and the fact I haven't had a change to meet any other Dallas racers yet!) my hurtle is going to be motivating myself to train solo.  I've heard that getting to the HIM and IM distance you HAVE to have a group to keep you motivated. Any seasoned folks have any input/suggestions on this?

I'm looking at the Oilman again for my second HIM.  But with a kid heading to college this fall my training plans might be interrupted!

I'm doing the Marble Falls HITS half in April.  I'm glad the weather is starting to change - I need much more time in the saddle.

There are a lot of DFW area groups you could train with! Fit2Train, PlayTri, Triple Threat Tough... just to name three.

You don't HAVE to have a group to train with. Some people like it and it helps motivate them, but it isn't a absolute must.

I know for me, I did all my swim and run training alone for IMKY (2008) and IMTX (2012). For IMKY I did my cycling with my cycling club (Greater Dallas Bicyclists), and for IMTX I did it with two friends who were also doing the race.

You can find groups to swim with in DFW, such as the Dallas Aquatic Masters. You can run with local running clubs as well. For riding you can join a cycling club, or just hit up the local rallies when they start up again.

If you live in the southern part of DFW (Grapevine and south) you can check out the Tri-junkies.

While not having done a HIM or IM, I am not sure why you have to train in a group?

So far I like training by myself as it allows me to train when it fits my schedule and do the pace I need to do.

In our club are numerous people that have done IM's and train mostly by themselves.

?I'm doing my first HIM in Cozueml Sept 22 and there are a few options for groups I have found.

FW?TRI ???Friends who TRI and TRICowtown.

FWTRI I think is pretty new I have met a few of their members and it seems like a good group of people.

TRI Cowtown has been around and I know one of their members but not much more.

I'm thinking about joining one of the groups as I'm sure I can learn the tricks of the trade that others have learned by mistakes/ trial and error... no need to make the same ones.

My schedule varies so no training group will match but maybe a few workouts will line up. My swim needs lots of work unlike the bike or run just putting the time in will not help my technique.

Good luck to all!!

I'm already getting excited and still got 27 weeks to go! Just hope I can keep the excitment and motivation (which I think a group WILL help with).
