I was wondering if any of you have had similar experiences, and what (if anything) you did/can be done.

I have a neighbor across the street, who has two bigger dogs (I'm  not sure of the breed) who bark endlessly.  It has gotten so annoying during the summer months that I have had to shut my living room window.  I thought that with winter here, and the house locked down tight that it would become less of a nuisance, but I can still hear them bark for hours (and yes some days it is hours I have marked down the times).

I have said something to them once, and they seemed like they didn't care.  I know that they know about their dogs barking, I heard the guy once say 'why do you have to be annoying and bark all the time', albeit in a joking fashion.

Part of me feels bad for them they are big dogs that are locked up in a small fenced in yard.  But enough is enough!

Neighbor's dogs barked constantly and complaining didn't help much at all. Was ready to take legal action, 3 neighbors filling a complaint, court, etc, when she came over & asked us to share the cost of repairing our common fence. Time to deal! Been much better since. You have no fence so check your local ordinances and follow that course.

i had the same problem, most towns (city's) have laws about this, i complained to the city and the owners got a warning that if the barking wasn't taken care of the next time they would be fined and after that the dogs could even be taken away.

We have had this problem. Our neighbors just don't care and the problem is more than just barking. We have called police, animal control, complained to the Village Clerks office. They have been fined more than once by more than one organization. The last time animal control was called they hid the dog inside and denied they owned the dog.

So, I just purchased a Dog Dazer Ultrasonic Dog Deterrant to try out. It is supposed to send some kind of sound that dogs don't like. I'm also going to take it with me on the bike and try it out when dogs are chasing me. I just got it today so I will let you know if/how it works although these dogs are small-medium size.

Good luck, I know what a nuisance this is. We're lucky if the dogs just bark from their yard. When they really act up they like to bark at us in our own yard.

Don't know what you might do about the barking dog, but I'd say that your at an ideal point in life to start a garage band.  I hope your singing is really bad, too.

Thanks for your input, it looks like my next step will be to call the police.  Didn't want it to come to that, but really there aren't many options.  I do like the airsoft gun though Laughing do they make it with a rifle and scope?

Please do, i've seen these and thought about them, but am a bit leery.

Lol not a bad idea.  I am a terrible singer.  Just need to get a really loud amp, and a guitar now.

High frequency High Volume sound blaster - something in the 22,000 Hz range and @ 120dB. That will take care of this little problem. Whenever the dogs start barking give them a 1 minute blast.  They will quickly learn from this negative reinforcement.

Thereare commercial products: http://pestcontrol.netfirms.com/dog_bark_stopper.htm

but if you (or a friend) is electronically inclined you can build on fairly easily.

even with airsoft I cannot condone any sort of "shooting" dogs. that is the wrong approach.

In this case there is probably a bigger issue. Do the neighbors spend time with the dogs or are they barking in the yard because their people are inside and they are stuck outside getting ignored? Dogs bark for a reason. I realize they are not your dogs so you may not be able to identify the reason but instead of finding your own deterrent I would approach animal control and then the cops about a possible case of animal neglect as evidenced by the continual barking.

If these neighbors have money maybe suggest they find a GOOD and REPUTABLE trainer who uses dogs signals and body language with positive reinforcement to help them find out why their dogs are barking and fix it.

Good luck!

You might also explain to them the cost of a bark collar is cheaper than a ticket. Dogta makes a grat bark collar that will make even the hardest barking dog stop that costs about $80 at cabelas. It keeps my coonhound quiet.

It's my experience that neighbors who are insensitive enough to let their dogs bark incessantly, will not be easily reasoned with.

I'm hoping you're not serious - but this is not cool.  Airsoft or not, they do break skin and the BBs lodge under the skin.

I live in a neighborhood where there's also a lot of dogs out in the yards day and night. Yes they bark as thats what dogs do sometimes. They also mostly don't bark at nothing. I find more often than not they're barking at cats out wandering the streets. Maybe bring a little curiosity to the neighborhood and the dogs might be quieter.

We deal with this at my barn. Two blue heelers bark incessantly every time I'm in the ring riding.  They even come off their property all the way to the creek at the edge of the barn's property and have bitten the horses when I have trail ridden.

I've tried to convince the barn owners to call the police to issue a noise disturbance, but they don't want to exacerbate a bad situation (the owner cannot be reasoned with).  I only mentioned that to her since I have had friends that have had the police come to them b/c a neighbor has complained about their barking dogs.  They were told if the barking didn't stop, the dog would get taken away!  I"m not sure if they followed through, but it scared my friends enough to use a trainer, get bark collars, and eventually take their dogs to day care.

Obviously Tony was writing in jest. But even that aside... if I can take an airsoft bellet to the bare skin at point blank range and it not break the skin, there is no way it is going to penetrate a dog and "lodge under the skin".

In my town it is a misdemeanor to have your dogs barking incessantly.

I would say your response depends on your neighbors. If they are reasonable and decent people perhaps you talking to them will fix the problem. But if they aren't I would go to the police first. That way you are anonymous. If you talk to them first, nothing happens then you call the cops, they are going to know who called the cops.

My upstairs neighbors have two dogs that start crying / howling when left alone for long periods. I've complained to the management company and they said the neighbors apologized (also said maybe I was hearing their baby cry instead of a dog WTF)

Still happens, still complain, and no solution yet. I'm hoping they move with two kids under 3, 2 dogs, in a 1200 loft....yikes!

I know how annoying a barking dog can be but an air soft gun is NOT the answer

Sorry Lisa, I'm probably the biggest softy when it comes to Dogs and Cats so I can confirm that I've never shot a dog, or at a dog with an Airsoft gun (or any other type of gun).  However, I cannot say the same for humans and more specifically my children.  They have been shot many times, and it was not for barking.  They were shooting at me as well.

Also, just for confirmation.  Airsoft BB's most certainly do not lodge under the skin.  My son has one of the most powerful airsoft guns money can buy and I've been hit on bare skin from less than 12 inches with the "heavy" BB's and they leave a mark, but nothing more.  I think paintball's do far more damage.

I think the problem is, anything you do to the dog, YOU can get in trouble.  Your only recourse is the authorities.

Shooting, or poisoning, or pepper spray or whatever was (and was NOT suggested) - if you are caught doing it, they could file charges against YOU, I assume.  When they are the problem.

Maybe my city has more strict rules, but you call animal control and they have a specific protocol, even down to removing the dog after warnings and fines.
