Swim - Practice, Practice, Practice. I don't do drills as swimming is my strong suit but my average is about 1:45 per 100m. Just keep at it.

Bike - Yes...chains come in different sizes (9, 10, 11 speed, fixed, etc). Count your rings on your cassette. If you have 10...it's a 10 speed. If you have 9....you guessed it...9 speed. Best bet on the chain is to buy one and have an LBS put it on. They may have to add/remove links. If not done right, you'll blow another chain or have it too loose which is counter-productive. With regards to your other chain, they have a chain tool that measures the distance on the chain to see if its loose....again....an LBS would probably do this for free, thus saving you the money for the tool itself. The tire issue is a puzzler. If could be several things including the freehub, bearings, skewers, tire pressure, crack or deform in the bike frame.....whatever it is, it's not normal. Again....a local bike shop visit is in order. My suggestion is to hit them up.

Run - What James said....have a running coach look at you and make some suggestions. Go to a group run and find out who's leading it....then ask. It could be something so small that will totally change your form.

Have my marathon this Sunday, but was able to get in an easy workout today.  James- thanks for the drill tips.  I looked at some videos online of "proper" swim technique and realized I was a little off on a couple things (mainly that stroke was ending early- was pulling out at the waist instead of thigh).  I did the fist drill as well.  Definitely an awkward feeling, lol.  It did make me realize something though- I cross centerline when I breathe.  Once I started trying to correct that, I noticed a more smooth stroke.  Only did a quick 400m timed swim as a quick gauge, but managed 2:15/100m and would've likely been able to keep it going.  Also, stroke count was 24 per 25m, so again, THANK YOU!

awesome! Keep working on it and it will come. A lot of people do not go all the way through on their stroke and it will help! Did you notice a huge difference after swimming with fists only and then using your hands!  I love that drill and do it religiously!

Honestly, it didn't seem like there was a huge difference (though the stroke count was 29-30/25m).  Either that means my regular stroke is really inefficient or my arm placement/use in the stroke is awesome.  Probably the prior, but I like to assume the later, lol.

Hi everyone. Sounds like training is going well for most of you.

I did a 158.5km bike ride (99miles) - I really wanted to crack the 160k/100mile mark, but oh well. Next week. That was 6 hours. 1 more 6 hour ride, then a 5, then that is it for super long stuff. 6 weeks to go now!

Run is going well. Longest run recently is 24km (15miles). I've got 2:40 planned this week which might get me to 25-26km, and that will be the longest one for me. So far feeling good!

Brad - how are you feeling? 3 or 4 weeks to go now?

Swimming - geh - just keeping practicing. Don't try to force it, just focus on technique. Still my weakest aspect.

Bike bits and pieces - I'd love to learn how to do all my own work - there appears to be a few good books around. That will be something I learn to do next year. For now, any major problems I go to my LBS. Also, I've noticed on my long rides that my left big toe goes pretty numb. Not sure if it is due to pressure on the ball of my foot. It's not painful, just numb when I go to move it.

Keep trucking along team!

All my long sessions are done (kind of). I did 10 mile run on Satruday and 92 on trainer yesterday.

All that's left is a 75 mile ride / 5 mile brick next weekend (and a 14 mile run).

Then another long-ish run and very short bike.

Then....a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike, and then a 26.2 mile run. It's a long training day. LOL

T-minus 19 days.......

This weekend I started a running group at the church I go too. We had 33 people sign up and 27 show up for the 1st group run. I had everyone write down their goals for the class and it was great to read them all. Some wanted to just finish the race, others wanted to beat 45 minutes! It was truly inspiring to see people who have never started a running program to be out there trying. we are doing a 12 week course, which is a basic couch to 5k class. I am leading and my wife and some other friends are helping me by running alongside people, encouraging them as they go.

I did tell the group that I could not allow any 40-44 yr old men in the group because I have enough competition already!

T-5 days!!!!!!  Surprised I'm not sure I am ready for this.  My first half ironman.  I am well into my taper and now beginning to wonder why I ever thought I could do a half ironman.  I don't even want to discuss how ridiculous it is of me to even begin to think about a full ironman!  I have completely lost my mind.  I realize now it is the totally insane people that do these things.

At this point I have paid the money and did the training.  I guess that means I need to show up and get it done.  If you don't hear from me after the race, it's because I got eaten by an alligator or a shark, smashed at the bottom of the water by a manatee, drown by the heard of fast swimmers that are starting right AFTER me or some other crazy calamity that can only happen to an insane person trying to imitate a triathlete.

I LOVE THIS SPORT!  It is an adventure everytime!!!

mkennedy- GOOD LUCK!  You can do this!

I just posted my race report for the OKC Memorial Marathon this last weekend.  Could have gone better, but it is what it is.  Just proves that commitment and training are key.  Still a PR, but I've got to work on my long race training and nutrition if I want to keep doing these races.

Mkennedy- I think you are having normal taper madness thoughts. I know taper time is the worst time to listen to those voices in your head, cause mine always say "you need one more bike/swim/run" Don't listen to them!!!!  Take in the experience and have a good time, the hard part is over!

Warner- the thing I struggle the most with is nutrition! I can totally understand the issues and I will always be working to find the best combo for me it seems. Great job on your race! Sounds like it is going to be close to the same course for Redman?

Now is the time to get your mantra in your head too.....or your "calm down phrase". We don't want a repeat of your last OWS..... You know you're going to panic, so get it into your head that you're going to be able to calm yourself down too......

You got this! Take it all in. Enjoy the experience. Smile. I bet you set a PR!!!!

The marathon ran through the heart of OKC.  The swim and run will be in and around the lake only.  The bike will go from the lake, NW away from town, taking you away from all the scenic awesomeness.  It sucks since there is less to enjoy "tourist-wise" but in reality, who's paying attention to all that when you're hammering away on the bike anyways?  The lake is definitely a great venue though.  Hopefully the roads are paved and smoothed or it'll be a bumpy ride for part of the bike.

Rocketman received approval from the US Fish and Wildlife YESTERDAY!  The race director said he knew they would all along.  I doubt that since he was emailing all the participants and asking for us to send letters and make donations.  I guess now I REALLY have to do the race.  Smile

Who hoo!!! You WILL be racing!! Excited for you!! ................:....... Question for all: are triathlons different than half marathons/marathons in That you must be present when picking up your bib? Are you allowed to pick up someone else's bib if you have a photo copy of thier ID? I've done at for half marys ... A friend backed out of racing wildflower sprint on Saturday. Said I can have her bib... Heck yeah, ! It's free but just not sure about logistics. What do you think??

Nevermind::: Participants found racing under another persons name will be disqualified and both entrants will be reported to USA Triathlon for disciplinary action which can include being suspended from all USAT events for 1 year.... Likelihood of getting caught is slim but still, not goin to chance it!

No problems here.  Everyone has been very entertaining and supportive.  You have all helped me hit some serious goals already.  Oh...I only posted it in my training log, so I should probably post this here.  I have to admit that I don't go through people's training logs.

This past Sunday was the last indoor triathlon of the winter.  I have been doing them all winter long to get my feet wet with triathlons.  Well......I KILLED IT!!!!  I had a time of 54:32 on the Short Course (300m swim, 10 mi. bike, and 3 mi. run).  I was 1st in my Age Group and 2nd overall.  I ended up in 1st for my Age Group for the season on the Short Course with 118 points.  My wife and son were there cheering me on and it felt great to see the results of all the hard work I've put in and all the support those two have given me.  So all in all since I joined the thread with everyone.....30 pounds lost and over 20 minutes cut from my first to last indoor triathlon time.  I'm seriously ready for my races this year (Currently have 4 on the calendar and scheduled on my Training Log).

Thank you to everyone in this thread for sharing everything that you are going through.  It provided me some serious inspiration and kept me going with my training.  I look forward to hearing from everyone as this season keeps moving on!

Devilsdog: AWEOME job on the tri! Your training has paid off! Also Congrats on your weight loss! Bet you feel great!! My Training the past week was terrible. I had too many jobs, many of which I had pre-arranged with teachers. Onthe only day I had off, I dropped my kids off only to see the principal and office gal flagging me down... A teacher had an emergency and they needed a sub. I was in full running gear. GRRR. So went home, changed and worked again I really hate to see my graphs look so... Um, color-less and nonexistent. This week is starting to turn out he same. Daughter has projectile puked off and on for going on 2 days. Luckily husband was home in office yesterday so got workout in. Today no. These are the days that I wish I had a bike trainer. :|. Mentor group: I'm good either way. Not too many active participants so mentors, you make that call. I tend to get a little sporadic with updating anyway.
