Subject: Some free entries for HFP races for newbie triathletes
At a race last season there was a timing screw up that took 5 months to fix (mostly due to a now-unemployed timing coordinator), and the race series owner offered me a year of free racing. I demured, it wasn't that big a deal, I just wanted it fixed so my ratings would be accurate (I would have had a too high score being listed in the wrong race and my swim reported in 1/2 the time it actually took me). this timing issue was the only issue I'd ever had in several years of racing with HFP Racing, and their customer service and events had always been top notch.

Instead we worked out a deal where i was given a code that is good for X number of free races; I'm going to use a few of them, and the rest are going to go to newbie triathletes (at least twice as many as Im going to use, probably 3 times as many). I'm going to be looking for folks doing either their first race or stepping up from a try-a-tri (some RDs call these super sprints) into the big leagues. HFP serves mostly Ohio, but has races in WV and races close to the borders on all sides of Ohio. I'm looking for folks willing to commit a specific race so i can track how many entries are used, and how people do with going through with them. Their race list was supposed to go up on 1/1 for 2013, but it looks like it will be a few days late with the new website revamp hitting a short snag (sick web developer).

if you are someone or know someone who would be interested in doing your first ever tri at an HFP event in 2013, let me know. I figure I'll have more interested parties than I have race slots, so I'll have to come up with a way to decide who gets them, but for now I'm trying to gauge interest
I know there's a thread about some folks being disappointed with HFP, but my first season I did mostly HFP races, and I have to say that I can count on 1 hand the number of races that I've felt were a better experience in even a single aspect. I think HFP like so many regional and larger race management companies is going through some growing pains these days, and it's clear their timing issues came to a head last year and hopefully means it will be resolved going forward. I've never had a race day issue at their races.

I'd be interested in the flag city multisport celebration Olympic distance. I am shooting for rev3 Sandusky in August and this would be an excellent first race to practice OWS, transitions, etc.

My wife is looking to do her first Tri and would be interested in doing one. White Star Triathlon in Gibsonburg ohio would be her first whenever they announce a date.

I think what you are offering is awesome! I completed my first "mini" sprint in Cincinnati last summer and am planning on moving to full sprints this coming summer. I have the Caesar Creek sprint on my schedule in July so I would be very appreciative.

Wow!  What you're doing is fantastic!

I'm not a newbie (unfortunately?) but can attest this is a great thing that's being offered!!!  Take advantage of this if you can!  What a great way to get your feet wet--literally!

Kudos to you!

I'm in Columbus, OH and would love to get my hands on a free entry. I did a mini sprint (Greenswell) last year and attempted the sprint at Giant Eagle, but kinda freaked out on the swim. I can't do Giant Eagle in 2013, as I'll be in Lake Placid cheering for my brother in his first IM. But once they get their schedule up, I'll be figuring out my race schedule for the year.

I put up a post on my blog with all the details. I'm asking folks to comment on the blog if they're interested and provide a valid email during commenting so I have a way to contact them if they're selected.

Very cool of you but is HFP OK with you giving out the free entries to others they gave you?

Sorry if it wasn't clear above but yes, this has been 100% cleared by Shannon Kurek. I have 9 more race entries to give away to any of their races this season, and 1 more on top of that maybe if I don't find another one that fits my schedule. I've already given away one on top of the ones Im using.

In reviewing the list, Flag City and White Star are not going to be held this year, or at least not managed by HFP, so unfortunately I don't have entries to give away for those races. Shannon confirmed this is the full multisport event calendar for HFP this year, but they will be adding something cycling specific later on in the month. If you were looking at those races but still want to get free entry to an HFP event for your first race, take a look at their calendar and let me know what other race you would be interested in (A good replacement for Flag City would be Maumee Bay State Park. It's a little earlier, but a great race)

I've selected someone for my first 2 slots, but there's plenty of time as I will have at least 7 more to give away.

Since the White star isnt going to be happening I think the deer creek in mt. sterling ohio would be a good fit for her.

I was given a free race entry as well for catching a screw up in the points for the series. I tried my free entry to register for the series and it worked. I didn't go through with it because I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do. What are everyone's thoughts?

If he gave you a single free entry, I dont see why not. A full year seemed a bit too much, so Im glad it worked out the way it did.

I still have 3 free entries to give away, for any newbies who havent signed up to be picked yet.

Dear techknowgn,

Thanks for offering up slots to new racers!

I'm looking to participate in my first tri this year and would be very interested in a slot if you have any still available. I'm most interested in a sprint. I'm not familiar at all with HFP though. Do you have a link to their race schedule to see dates and learn a bit more about courses in Ohio? I live in Cleveland by the way.

Alex

She isnt very good with PC's and honestly I really appreciate the offer and I think its great that you are doing this. You have a large response to your offer and I think that I would rather see someone else get this than myself. Not that I dont want her to get a free entry but There might be other that need it more than I do.

Thank you for the offer!

Techknowgn,

I'd like to claim a spot for the August 18th Triathalon in Vermillion if you still have one of the two spots left.

Thanks!

I will be doing the Half Duathlon at the Great Buckeye Challenge on Sept. 1st.  I am not a newbie to HFP races but I am looking to step up my distance in a HUGE way. I have done a few sprints duathlon and a womens' only tri in the past.   I am not sure if I fall into the category to qualify for one of your spots, but please let me know if I do. Thanks!!!
