Swim
  • 46m 26s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

Rough seas, 3ft viz, zig zag swim route and shallow water where fingers scrapped the bottom now and then
What would you do differently?:

My swim was good considering todays swim condition
Transition 1
  • 07m 47s
Comments:

This was my first 1/2 Iron Man distance T1 and I spent lots of time making sure that everything was just right before I started the bike.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 2h 56m 13s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.07 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Drink more during the ride
Transition 2
  • 06m 6s
Comments:

Once again I spent lots of time eating/drinking and making sure I had everything ready for the run before I left the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more at the very beginning of T2. I was happy with my prep.
Run
  • 2h 44m 53s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went ok for me till the last 2-3mi. We couldn't find the last 2-3mi race route OR finish OR parking the day before, so I didn't realize that the run course ran us right past the finish THEN another aprox 2mi through down town Key West. I finished my drink and gels when I saw the finish line the first time and had to run the last 2mi with no drink or gels back around to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Carry more than 4 gels as I ran out of fuel before the race end. Drink more Gatoraide.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not eating and drinking enough. Not knowing the last 2mi of the run course.

Event comments:

This was my 1st 1/2 Iron distance race and I won my 60-64AG, so I was very happy.

Course: This was THE roughest road surface I have ever tri raced on. By the end of the 56mi my hands, feet, shoulders, head and neck ached from the repeted pounding of the rough road. We had a 15-20mph head wind going out 28mi to the turn around then a nice tail wind back into Key West. Had to dodge a few cars a few times but I passed a LOT of riders who didn't know how to ride into a strong head wind for long miles

wow!  impressive on the AG win  I would be happy too, especially given it was your first at this distance!!  So the race itself?  Not a great course and not organized well? Just wondering if it's a "recommend"?

congrats!

Mimir98--- This was the very first Bone Island Triathlon ever held.  With that in mind, IMO this race was very well organized/supported and run.  I would highly recommend this race to anyone, even to a new 1/2 iron distance triathlete as their first race.  This race only had aprox 500 racers so it was a smaller race and therefore easier for a newbe like me. The water is warm for this time of year and shallow.  The bike is almost completely flat and basicly a straight out and back (though the road surface is extremely rough).  The run is well marked and supported.  The problems I had with the run was my fault not knowing the last 2mi in advance, not the RD.  I am so glad that I picked this race as my first 1/2 Iron distance triathlon.

Thank you for your compliments.

Ahhh...great feedback!  Thanks for the details.  Sounds like a decent one that will only get better...plus, how can anything besides a hangover be bad in Key West??

I am impresse and what a way to do your first 1/2.  I enjoyed TRIKW but didn't know how good a 1/2 would be on the bike.  Were you able to keep your HR in the range you wanted?

Congrats! I did the HIM as well and would pretty much have to echo what Spearit says about the course. The swim was rough though, so if you get seasick or panicky and an OWS, you might want to either pick an easier swim course or make sure you practice OWS with waves. I had some issues sighting buoys and so I swam some extra yardage trying to get back on track from time to time. Once I even got tossed off track by a rogue wave. Surprised me a bit. The water temp though was great. I have to warn that the "winter" in KW ( I am a local) can be windy. So keep that in mind when making your plans. The bike was tough going out, but I probably was more freaked out my the shoulder/road condition in  a few places and the traffic of an open course, and remember I live here. Got held up by the Sheriff's Deputies at the turnaround for 10 minutes and that was frustrating. But overall the organizers did a good job with the aid stations. I would rather they change the last 5K from the obtuse zig zap course that made you run by the finish once before you got to finish (that was just cruel), but I have a feeling they will tweak it a bit for next year. BTW they had some of the best trophies I have seen for the winners.

I echo everything written about the race. Rough water and roads. Strange run course. I underestimated the difficulty of the race and it showed in my times.

hoffsquared---thank you.

topolina---thank you for the kind words and glad that you had a good race. Maybe we will see you next year for the 2014 Bones Tri.

flalamb---yes, I was able to keep my HR where I wanted it by using my 910XT before and during the race.  It is one of the best tri tools I have ever bought.  Thanks for the kind words also.
