Subject: Off road triathlon, what to look for in mtb?

Hi every body, in 3 months time I will be competing in my first tri and it is an off road sprint, and I am planning to keep it that way, not a big fan of road cycling...

I love mtb but is time that I change mine, a 2 years old specialized hardrock, and would like to upgrade, what shall I look for in a mtb for triathlon?

Thanks for your advice.

Nothing wrong with a 2 year old hardrock.  Maybe try your first on that and decide what you're looking for in an upgrade.  More or less suspension?  Better components?  Better brakes?  Different wheel size?

You think? I don't even have a lock on the fork which makes it difficult to go up hill... So you reckon do a couple of them and then decide?

If you want a new one definitely demo a bunch. That's how I chose mine. I think most of the people I saw at the Xterra we went to were on 29ers.

I never lock the fork off road. I only do it when I go uphill on pavement off the saddle.

Specialized epic 29er. You will love the suspension this thing is made for that! John.

Most these days are going with a hardtail 29er, it seems.  Personally I'm still rocking a 2000 Specialized Stumpjumper fsr xc. Sealed  It's old, but lightish (full 9spd XTR, ~26 pounds which is decent for full suspension) and I like it.  Anyway, it's the not the bike, it's the engine...

FWIW, I never lock either front or rear.  In fact, the rear lock was removed by PUSH when they re-valved the shock with propedal.
