I have been off this site for quite a long time, so I beg pardon if this topic was recently addressed (like in the past couple years.) I was wondering how many of you who use a trainer take the time to switch out the rear tire, or even the whole wheel, between trainr time an outside time. I am so lazy I was consideing finding a cheap used road bike of the appropriate size that I could dedicate just for use on the trainer while my "A" bike gets used for outdoor work. Thanks for any opinions.

I use a regular road tire, but not my regular tire.  I steal the wheel of my partners bike cause I have more expensive tires on mine.

Current tires have around 4500 miles. I've done about 90% of that on a trainer. Rear tire is more visibly worn than the front one, but still has a lot of life left. Have never changed it.

I am way too lazy to swap out tires.  My habit has been to just replace rear tire before my A race each year.  Fronts are every other year or so since I ride so much on the trainer.

This is what I did too, Nick. I use a Continental trainer tire. I've been using the same one for about 4 years.

Since I have 2 sets of training wheels, I have the cheaper rear wheel with a trainer tire on it.

Makes life easy :p

I use the trainer during the week and if the weather is good head outdoors at the weekend.  Spent about a month tire swapping before getting a cheap dedicated wheel/casette and trainer tire.

I had a separate rear wheel setup with a trainer tire.

But having since moved over to super heavy flat resistant tires for training...I find it works fine on the trainer.  Using softer tires...they would get eaten up in 15 minutes.

I didn't buy a separate wheel for it, but I did get a Vittorio trainer tire and put that on.  Knowing that my bike isn't leaving the trainer throughout all of winter, it wasn't hard to motivate myself to change it back in October.  I won't have to change it again until early April at the soonest.

I have a dedicated trainer bike.  RE I used a regular tire and had NO problems.  Then I got a "trainer tire"  and it was a HUGE PITA.  It flatted at least 10 times and in the end it blew out...............yep I had a blow out on the stupid trainer.  I went back to a regular tire.

Vittorio trainer tire.  Both my tri and road bikes have standard training wheelsets.  I used the rear wheel off my road bike and put on the trainer tire.  I use my tri bike on my trainer as I'm trying to get used to aero position even though I know there is a difference in street vs trainer comfort.

This!   I found a cheap tri bike.  I even bought it without wheels and put some old ones on there with a trainer tire.  That bike is in the shop currently, but usually lives on my trainer.

I started out with a continental trainer tire that I swapped weekly, it was a PITA to put on the OEM Vista SL rims.  But I did get real good at changing tires and it saved me during a sprint race when I flatted!  Then I bought another used wheel(set, TTR3) and my OEM wheel is my dedicated trainer tire, it takes me less than 90 seconds to swap out the cassette.

When my old Rubino Pro slick tire was ready for replacing I put it on the trainer to see how long it would last.  40 minutes later I had rubber on the floor and cords showing.  That was one tire not to use on the trainer.

I have a seperate rear wheel with the same cassette as my race bike.

I just swap it out as needed. My bike spends a month/so at a time attached to the trainer during the winter.

I get my tires from the bike shop out of the trash. They'll toss me a couple of old scrap worn out tires and I don't care. They burn up and I get another.

I have nice Continentels for the race and I'd rather not burn those up.

In the 3 years I've had a trainer, I never bothered to swap. Too much of a pain in the rear (no pun intended!). Or maybe I'm too lazy. But I want to be able to jump on whenever I want. On the flp side, I don't do a tremendous amt of riding outside either....

I have old tires that have cuts in them that I wouldn't use on the road. Some of them unfortunately happened to be fairly new so I use those on my trainer now instead of tossing them. I have my stock wheels for my tri bike and have those on except for when I will be racing and then I put my race wheels on with other tires.

So if you don't want to spend money on a trainer tire and you have been unlucky and cut your tire beyond wanting to use it on the road think about keeping it around to use on your trainer.

I did notice that my more expensive rear road tyre was getting worn down quite quickly using my trainer (i.e., my trainer does eat tyres!). As I tend to alternate using my trainer/riding on the road (depending on weather/time available/scared off road riding because of occasional encounters-with-idiot-drivers), and I didn't want the hassle of changing out a trainer tyre for my road tyre, so I just bought a cheap wheel and cassette (firstly checking the road wheel cassette type) and I now swap out the whole wheel.  Really quick and really easy.

I just swap out tires. It only takes a couple of minutes plus it has made me pretty quick at changing a flat. If I'm feeling lazy I will just take my road bike and leave the tri bike on the trainer.
