Subject: question about bottom brackets and quarq

so I'm wanting to add power to my road bike, which is a 2011 Trek Madone 4.5 - and I'm confused!

First of all the bike is full Shimano 105, which I don't think is a problem with a quarq (which would be SRAM), but I want to make sure I'm correct on that.

Second, From what I can tell the 2011 4.5 is not BB90, so I think it is 86.5?  But then what's the deal with BB30, GXP, WTF, ETC.... (!?!)  I have no idea what I should be looking to buy for this bike.

Enter smart people... your help is greatly appreciated!  (also in the market for something used, 175 crank length)  Thanks for the info!

the world of bottom brackets is a confusing array...

in your case, I think you're right, it's not BB90. 2012 model 4.5 went to "BB90" but was something else in 2011 (I don't know what it is..sorry). Most likely another press fit type of BB.

here's a page from Park Tool on those type of bottom brackets.

http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/bb90-bb86-bb92-etc-bottom-bracket-service

As for the other ones you mentioned..most are 68mm english thread (some are italian thread 70mm, and other sizes)

BB30 is another press fit "threadless" bottom bracket system

GXP is SRAM's external cup threaded bb

MegaEXO is FSA's external cup threaded bb

Shimano has their DuraAce 7900 and Ultegra 6700 external cup threaded bb

interesting page from Dan Empfield..

I recommend calling Quarq, telling them what bike you have and what BB it has and letting THEM recommend a set up....

For Trek Madones and Speed Concepts to use SRAM cranks you need the GXP version plus the SRAM bearing kit/adapter (Trek part # 404700).
