I'm doing it as a warm up for Oceanside....but my training has been really awful lately! Between the flu and significant travel for work, I've logged a total of just 2 swims, 2 rides and 3 runs in the past 2 weeks! YIKES!

besides swimming I have been lacking in training as well due to the flu.  My bike build has been taking longer than I planned it to so I have been bikeless since Christmas.  It looks like a fun race and its kind of ironic that my last race for 2012 was the HITS Palm Springs and my first is also  Palm Springs.  Its a good venue.

Any bets on water temperature? We're having lows around 40 the week of the race. How many layers of caps are you planning on? I'm thinking at least two latex caps, probably a neoprene and a latex.

I suspect the lake will be in the high 50s.

I am just doing the sprint so the quicker I get in and out the better.  i will probably just go with some gloves and booties.  Still deciding on which suit to wear but I will probably just bring both in case.

My strong advice is that everyone get used to the water this time in particular. The promoters' email talks about what they do every year, they allow swimming the previous day - back to back with the fantastic clinic put on by Bill Bell and Pam Galbraith. If you haven't seen them, do. They have great stories and experiences.

Anyway, cold water. I have a lot of experience with it with OWS at Avila Beach up the coast, and can pass on the basics. If it's in the mid to low 50s, try the "cap sandwich," latex/neoprene/latex. Higher than that, try less layers. The key is to keep your forehead warm enough. My bet is Lake Cachuma will give us a day for neoprene and more.

I'm making a point of mentioning this because sometimes Cachuma can be too cold if you aren't prepared, and the temps the next few nights will be low. At the first HITS, it was so cold that a lot of people freaked, something that anyone can avoid if they have caps, and get wet first.

Hope to see you in the water Friday and before the gun!

Cheers!

Ha. You might have seen the typo and humor in it: not Cachuma, Cahuilla. You can see by my profile info why I made the slip.

This will be my 4th consecutive year doing this race (matter of fact, my profile pic is me with my son at last year's race). I love the location and the setting and the course is nice and flat (which is good for an endurance wannabe like me). Finally got myself some Master's sessions, which has helped my technique but not my speed. I'm just hoping to not be exhausted by the time I get out of the water!
