Subject: Help me choose (inexpensive carbon wheels)
I've done a lot of research on new carbon race wheels on a budget. I am not willing to spend $1500+ on wheels so I've narrowed it down to these two sets:1. These inexpensive non branded Chinese wheels (that have been talked about at great lengths here on these forums)http://www.ebay.com/itm/321047762617?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648And2. Planet X carbon wheelshttp://www.planet-x-usa.com/product-p/wppx52ccl-700-shi-2024-blk.htmI know there are differences between the two in construction (full carbon vs alloy fairings, etc) but I am not sure that I know enough about this to make a decision based on the differences. I guess I am just looking for some guidance. Thanks so much.Mike

Have you checked out Flo wheels? A set of them are around $1000.

Before going with a Chinese brand, I would consider getting a disk cover from wheel builder for $100 and getting a good front wheel. That is how I raced for the last 2 years.

There isn't going to be much difference between them, as I understand it - they're both an older 'V', non-toroidal, shape but I give Planet X the nod for two reasons:

1. I know who they are and they have a solid reputation (though I believe I've seen people mention that eBay seller specifically).

2. Alu brake tracks means good all-weather braking and no need to go swapping out brake pads. I know that plenty of folks ride full carbon with no issues, just a personal preference.

FLO is a great option (love mine!) and a better, newer design that those, but they are almost twice the cost of those sets.

Whichever you choose, I second the recommendation to get a disc cover for the rear.

Nod for Flo, Planet X, rear cover.

Good luck.

I'd look at KarbonSpeed. I have a pair and i'm very happy with them. Quite a bit lighter than the Flos. They list at $1500 or so but you can get them for less than that. I got mine for $999 on Black Friday and I bet you can negotiate them down to that again. Also, they will fit tires and valve extenders for you (which can be tricky) - the wheels arrive literally ready to go. Finally, 10 out of 10 for their post-sales customer service. Recommended.

Thanks everyone.  I have a disc cover already.  I will trim it down to fit once I get new wheels.  I have heard a lot of great things about the flo wheels.  They sound great but they are 2x the price of the two I'm looking at.

I think I am going to go with the Planet X because I like the idea of having a phone number to call if, for some reason, there's a problem.

I think that it's a solid choice; it's hard to beat that price.  If they offered a deeper wheel, like a version of their 82/101 set, with the aluminum tracks I would have gotten those instead of my FLO's.

I probably would have given up some time on the course, but I would have saved enough money to pay for a second set of wheels or a TT helmet.

I don't think it's that simple.

Believe it or not, it is.
