There is no magic vitamin.

However this topic is hotly debated and researchers go back and forth. You will see studies that we waste money on vitamins/ supplements and you also see some studies that certain vitamin supplementation is beneficial. Trust me it goes back and forth.

Here is the problem. Researchers cannot really agree on how much of each vitamin etc we need. The RDA is even a innaccurate number....they know for.some.values it is the bare minimum we need but it may not be the number for optimal health. we know that most women do not ingest in normal food enough calcium. We also are not certain what each particular person needs. This can be variable person ti person, day to day even hour to hour.

Therefore, I believe if you do not haves a pristine diet with a lot of nutrient dense foods you would not be hurt supplementing with certain vitamins.

Fortunately most except ADEK are water soluble so for the most part you will only be flushing money down the toilet if you happen to be taking too much but you could potentially replacing something that you have a deficit in. UNLESS you test yourself regularly you typically will not know what you need at any particular time.

I personally.feel.people.should.find a middle.ground and not be on.either side of the spectrum of.being either completely against supplementation.nor megadosing By taking excessive amounts of vitamins.

MadMathemagician - 2013-03-02 12:41 AMMega doses of B12.  It's the only thing that helps my chemo damage lower intestines function nominally.

Have you tried B12 shots? I have B12 malabsorption issues due to medication so I give myself a shot every 2 weeks. It has made an amazing amount of difference, even from the oral mega doses. It does require a prescription from the doc but it's pretty easy to do if you don't mind needles.

Will investigate further.  Needles don't bother me, much.  One does what one has to do.

I take a multivitamin, fish oil, and glucosamine in the AM.  In the afternoon/evening I take a Vitamin C pill just cause I know I probably peed out all the vitamin C from the morning.

They could all be placebos at this point, but I'd rather be healthy and ignorant than injured/sick wondering what would have happened if I took them.

Beyond Tangy Tangerine multivitamin and vitamin D3 (5000 IU) daily.  I cut out the D3 supplementation as my sun exposure increases.

Where to begin......

I don't take a multi because I eat whole foods, fruit, lean meat, veggies and good carbs and protein.

Now, On lifting days I do a preworkout drink with amino acids, BCAA's and so on, but otherwise I take to following spread throughout the day:

Tonalin  - Body composition

D3 - lack of sunlight

Vit C

Turmeric - anti inflamatory

Cinnamon - anti anflamatory

B12 - energy

Tyrosine - various nerve receptors

Fish oil - Omega 3

B6 - energy

Magnesium - leg cramps

Zinc - immune system

Green Tea - anti oxidant and hate drinking it

I think that's it!  LOL!

A multivitamin every morning. Except for that, I try to eat well, which should even be sufficient to cover all my vitamin/mineral needs, and probably is.

Centrum Silver.  Have taken it on doctor's orders since my heart surgery in 2000.  Centrum Silver is relatively low in vitamin K so it doesn't interfere with my Coumadin.

B12 injections once a month by necesity. Other than that occassionally magnesium, and am trying to eat seeds that are high in zinc. A nutritionist friend of mine told me it would be a good thing.

Kelp - thyroid is sluggish

Flax Oil

I do extra Vitamin C if I feel the need.

FWIW I hardly ever get sick,  I am 46 and do not take or need any prescription drugs.

I can give numerous personal accounts of how supplements have improved my health, and thus my performance.  Here are just a few.

Several years ago I began suffering from pretty bad PMS "blues" every month.  I read about vitamin B to help mood but felt I was getting quite a bit of vitamin B foods and even amped them up.  Still it continued for years.  I finally started taking a B-complex daily.  Within a week, voila, I felt more like me again.  Been on it ever since, no PMS moodiness ever.  And I think we all know how the blues can affect training.

About 3 years ago I started having pretty bad muscle tightness and inflammation after running.  It started to hamper my performance and ability to complete longer runs.  Someone suggested fish oil even though I try to eat foods with omega fatty acids daily.  Within a few weeks of taking the fish oil my legs felt remarkably better and I was able to gain more speed that season.  It was a direct result of better quality runs that were possible because the inflammation was no longer there, or at least kept at bay.

Lastly and most poiniently, I found out recently that I severly lack progesterone and testosterone.  Side effects among other things are low energy during workouts.  The holistic supplements that were recommended to me for both issues are made up entirely of cruciferous vegetablesThat's it.  Thought I was getting plenty of those in the diet.  Well, after two weeks of being on these supplements--which are giving me a much more highly concentrated dose of what my body needs from these veggies--my progesterone and testerone are finally getting back toward normal levels for the first time in years.  And my workouts?  Feel AMAZING.  Stronger, better quality.

To say that vitamins and supplements have no benefit to me sounds silly.  To presume to get all of the nutrients you need to function at 100% optimization from food alone to me is naive.

I have a pretty varied diet, but take the following supplements:

Multi, Vit C, Glucosimine/Chondroitin, Q10, Turmeric

I'm considering cutting the Q10, Vit C and Turmeric and see how I feel.  I don't think they make that much of a difference.  But who knows...
