Subject: Ankle injury, not Achilles
Have always been a cyclist and 30-50 miles is a normal ride, to get into Tri I needed to mostly work on running and swimming. I essentially started with a couch-to-5k program since I really stink at it. Part way in my ankle became really sore after a run (we are talking only running about 8 minutes, so very minor). It is down around the ball on the outside, (lateral malleolus of the fibula) no issues with my knees, feet or shins, running in barefoot shoes that I'm really comfortable in. I have completely stopped running (going on two months) and have been swimming instead. Swimming over 2,000m at a time is not a problem so its not that cardio is my issue, so I'm really frustrated that I'm not able to make any progress with running. My ankle will be a little "achy" doing normal activities, notice it mostly walking up and down stairs. I jogged back to the car to grab something yesterday and now it hurts really bad.

What can I do??

Sounds like it could possibly be posterior tibial tendonitis. A common running injury. look it up and see if that matches your symptoms.

See a doctor.  I had pain during/after my last marathon on the outside of my foot (below ankle, and radiating down under the foot).  It improved as I recovered from the marathon, and I did a couple of short runs on it after that, but it was still "there"...maybe a 2 or 3 pain wise on a scale of 1-10.    I had made an appt with my podiatrist, and almost cancelled it, thinking it would resolve itself.  X-ray revealed a small stress fracture (cuboid bone).  Really surprised me.  Anway, no running for a month and recheck.  Would not have been good to continue running on it and extend the fracture.  So take it from me....go see a doctor and have it X-rayed to at least rule out something like that.

Posterior tibial tendonitis tends to cause pain along the inside of the ankle and arch of the foot...this doesn't sound like that to me.

Lateral ankle pain could be a stress fracture, peroneal tendinitis, impingement....get it looked it as its been going on far too long
