I actually got a notice from my employeer in the mail on Friday telling me of the same thing.

It told me that an "audit" was being performed and that I'd receive a packet in the mail within the week. From there, I'd have 30days to fill it out before they suspended my health coverage. Seems silly, but okay.

I thought it was odd, but I guess I do see the point.

1. Yes

2. Yes but not outrage, more like frustration

We had to do this and it is unfortunate that people have to try and cheat the system. For me it was more of a hassle gathering everything for the insurance company.

My employer has been doing this for the last four or five years.  During open enrollment, and any time I open our website on healthcare benefits, there is a reminder that any significant change in status must be reported timely for coverage and that failure to remove ineligible participants may result in termination.

It is theft if you are receiving benefits you are not entitled to (knowingly) and I don't see it any differently than falsifying timecards or embezzlement.

I guess jford says it better.. More like frustration.

As far as how am I being penalized?  If I have to spend my money and my time to prove that I am innocent, isn't that a form of penalty?  I know its small in this case, but never the less it is a "penalty" to me.

It’s not a penalty. The only reason you had to spend money to comply with the audit is that you didn’t have a copy of your marriage license and you had to go and get another one. That’s not your company’s fault--- that’s on you. It's not as if they asked you for some obscure document.

And anyway,if the audit saved the company enough money enough money to put off a rate increase, or reduce the planned rate increase even by a % or two, I suspect you probably made money on the deal.

I take it you don't work for a company that uses the "E-Verify" system?
When my company joined this movement (or whatever it is) all 12,000 of our employees were required to present 2 very specific forms of ID to "prove" we were who we were. Even though we already did this upon accepting employment (2, 10, or even 30 years ago). They had to re-scan the documents per some new government regulation. Someone in HR can clarify what I'm talking about I'm sure.

I never thought to look at it as a "penalty" that I had to dig up my SS card and passport.

My company recently began doing this also.  Kind of an inconvenience, but based upon all the things I see people do dishonestly to their employer, I don't mind at all.
