Pre-race routine:

changing into a thicker layered shirt in my car. :) It was cold in the a.m. I would later regret the thicker shirt. When the fog burned off, and the sun was shining, it warmed up quickly!
Event warmup:

Met a fellow BT'er at the start line, went for a little job...then got in place at the start, did my normal ham string, calf, and quad stretches.

Comments:

The trail was almost all gravel. Something I was not prepared for. I rarely run on trails, 95% of my running is done on pavement. At about mile 4-5 my calves (especially the right one) started to feel "tight." It wasn't quite a cramp, more of just a tightness. I continued to run, playing with my stride a little trying to stretch it out....it didn't work... tried to run with a shorter stride, and landing on different parts of my foot to minimize the calf muscles expansions and contractions. Nothing worked! It just kept getting tighter and tighter.

At about mile 8, I made the decision to pull out of the race. Was a tough decision, because I was on pace to crush my PR by almost 5 minutes!
What would you do differently?:

Train on more trails, research the course a bit more. I was not aware that this 1/2 was on an unpaved trail.
Post race
Warm down:

A nice ride in the car with a random spectator that I asked for a lift to the finish line. :) There was no way I could even walk 5 miles to the finish line.

Event comments:

Post race, met fellow BT'ers for a beer after.. That was the best part of my day!

Sorry the race didn't turn out as planned, but the after party sounds great. Very jealous.

Ah, dang gumdrop cramps!!  Sorry to hear you couldn't get them to ease up, especially being on track for a PR, but you were smart to call it and lucky to get a ride back!  Best of all you got to hang with Salty, so it was a good day!

DNF is definitely worth a Salty kiss ... you put in a great 8 miles (nice PR!!!) and executed this race well. Discretion IS the better part of valour sometimes!
