I do Flip turns. At the end of 100 I do a touch turn. Flip, Flip, Flip, Touch.

I do have a Garmin 910 but I still lose track. Too busy swimming to look at it.

Find what works for you.

wbattaile - 2013-03-17 1:54 PM Timex 100 lap digital watch. I hit the lap button every 100y.

^^^This.  I do open turns, so it's even easier for me.  Touch wall, press button, go.  I like that my lap time and # is displayed, and so is my total time every time I press the split button.  I can use the recall feature to see my splits.  $35, and it's still a watch/timer/alarm when not in the pool.

I tried all the other "non-device" methods, and would daydream, or focus on stroke, or have to shoo kids out of the lap lane and forget the lap count.  The sportcount finger ring intrigued me, but I already had the Timex.

I find that once I get up over 15-18 laps I start to day dream and tend to lose count of my laps. One of my buddies let me use a little watch that straps onto your finger.  It has a little button that you push to count each lap and keeps track of lap times and whatnot.  Kind of slick but I did end up double-tapping the button at one point so I came up one lap short. I knew this because it said my fastest lap time was 9 secs.

Does anyone else use this type of device? What other options are there? If you don't use a device what mental games do you play to make sure you don't lose count at 30 laps?

I count my laps in my head. If I lose count, I assume that I have done the least possible number (have I done 8 laps or 10 laps? don't know. i'll assume 8) so I have a vested interest in maintaining my count properly.

If I ever come to the end of a set, I can look at the clock and know if I missed a lap and I will do the 'extra' distance.

This is what has worked for me. Making the decision to always assume I have done the lesser number certainly sharpened my focus

+1 for the Garmin 910XT.

Pretty much the only game in town for the serious (or even semi-serious) triathlete.

I use the lane buoys. Move one back for every 100 YDS. I go up to 1000 yds. and then either work my way back or start over. Works great unless someone pushes them from the other end of pool.

I keep a shoe string sized cord at the end of the pool.  Every 100 yards I tie a knot.  After 10 knots, I start untying knots.  Simple old trick we used in the Army to keep up with distance travelled by foot.

I have a 910XT as well and it keeps the distance pretty well.  However I still count as I go.  I like to count lengths rather than laps and have two at a time in my head.  This tends to keep me on the right length since I am always going one way on even another way on odd and even if I start daydreaming at some point I remember where I am at.

I like the clock with the seconds hand idea that someone mentioned before, but I have another method that may be helpful - don't count.  Just swim.  In a race, we're not worried about lap counts, right? So, why not train that way?

My other method, which is more like making an educated guess, is to just to note the start time and finish time on the clock.  And since I roughly know how fast I swim, I then divide my total time with my rough speed per lap, and voila, I have the rough number of laps I swam.  In this was, I focus more of my mental energy on technique rather than trying to figure out "was that lap 14 or lap 15, or was it 17?"

Good luck finding a method that works for you.

I count per length and at times still struggle but it does make it easier for me. 200 yards = 8 lengths 100 yards = 4 lengths.  I've tried per lap and really screw that up even on 2 laps lol.

skysos - 2013-03-17 9:25 PM I go through the alphabet.  Like for the first 26 laps, I think of a city that starts with the next letter on each lap.  Then I start again at the top with a different category: animals, boys or girls names, whatever.... Then it's easy to calculate # of laps, as long as you remember where you stopped and how many times you looped through.  Hope that helps; this method is absolutely foolproof for me.

Love this idea...wish I would have read this before my 1500 TT yesterday.

I use the kickboard, which usually has a rounded top. I start with the kickboard pointing up. If I'm swimming hundreds, every hundred I move the kickboard one-quarter turn. When it is pointing up again, I've done four laps.

If need to count higher (like more than 8), you can add a second kickboard, use a pull buoy, etc.

I do the alphabet too! Usually I just think of a word for that letter. I like the category idea. I'll have to start doing that too!

Sometimes I'll break it down in groups. Like the last time I did 50 laps continuous, I broke it out in groups of 5-one for my mom, dad, son, daughter, & husband. Thought of them during "their lap", then started over with the next set of 5. Made me happy thinking of them.

Well I don't just swim laps, I complete a swim workout. So it is easier to keep track of.

For example:
W/U- 200 easy
8x50
4x150
ETC...

Now, I can't keep track of the "8" so I keep pennies beside the pool and move a penny into a cup each time.

If I do have a long swim (1,000 or a 2,000 yard/meter time trial), I just call out the distance under the water after each flip turn... "50"... "100"..."150"... etc. Somehow saying it out loud keeps it stuck in my head.

simpsonbo - 2013-03-17 5:01 PM Structured sets, pace clock.

This.  I like to keep swimming simple - follow the sets (master's swim) and only record total swimming time and total yards.

Anything that involves moving stuff around interrupts the flow of your workout ... maybe that's not much of a sacrifice for slow(er) swimmers.

There are AFIAK some general tricks to memorising that you try to associate the thing you want to remember with something else. I sometimes remember when I passed that other swimmer, or notice that on 100 that guy was taking a breather etc.

Another thing is to repeat for myself the distance in a number of ways, say "that was 100, next will be 150, I'm half way to 200" etc. And I only count in one end, that is the 50's not 25's.

But nothing beats he pace clock as previous explained.

Same here.  I count lengths, my wife counts laps (i have the shorter attention span)... whatever works for you.  I also print out my work out and add counts to it, so I know where I should be at the end of each set.  Keeps me on track.

I have a Garmin 910, but a guy at the pool I go to carries a ziplock bag of pennies. He then puts pennies equal to the number of laps he wants to do on the deck.  Every lap he knocks one into the pool.  Once he runs out he is done.  Seemed to work well for him.  I could see problems with it though if you are sharing a lane with someone.
