Subject: point to point swim race format ?
I have an oly tri coming up in a couple of weeks with the swim taking place in the Ohio river. If the current is over 1 knot the swim will change from a loop format to a point to point format swimming with the current. Has anyone done a point to point swim before? How does that work? How do you get from and back to transition?

Thanks, Rich

The P-T-P races I've done, we've had to walk.

Your transition will be where you finish the swim. If point to point, they will bus you to the start or you will have to walk!!! Point-to-Point races are the best. Get there early!!!

Like others have said, you take a bus or get to the swim start somehow.  Everythign else is the same.  At Over The Mountian last year, they had a bus take you to the swim start (across the lake).  Other than that, it's pretty much the same.

The first race I went to watch was a point to point and after seeing hundreds of athletes lined up waiting for buses I decided if I ever do that race I'll either make sure i'm WAY early or arrange for my own dropoff at the swim start.  People were complaining about arriving too late to get in a warm up swim.

I am doing a point to point in Chattanooga next week and they are shuttling everyone over in buses.

Most of the point to point swims I've done have been ferry starts where they bus us from transition to the boat, take us out onto the lake or bay, and we swim back to the shore right next to the transition area.

One time I ran into a situation where weather/water conditions changed on race morning, and we had to walk a mile down a beach to the swim start. That was a weird situation however.

In any case they usually set it up so T1 is minimized. The only possible exception is Alcatraz where it's a 1/2 mile "warmup" run on asphalt to T1. There they let you have a pre-T1 bag at the swim exit where you can get your wetsuit off, put on a pair of running shoes, and run to your bike rack. Even there many people choose to go barefoot or run in wetsuit booties to save the time.

Thanks for the info...since the format is weather influenced it sounds like we probably will be walking the mile to the swim start if it's p-p. But that will be ok if we get to swim with the current the whole way.
