Well, after last weekend, it's time to research arm sleeves.  I even soacked myself in sunblock and still got a little burned.

What are your favorite arm sleeves for sun protection?  Anybody use Craft?  Do you find that you still put sunblock on under it for extra protection?

I did the long sleeve shirt for bike and run with sunblock underneath. I burn just thinking about the sun and was burn free on a full IM in 40C+ heat.

Just ordered some DS arm coolers .  The wings looked nice too.  Thanks for the opinions.

Arm coolers helped me a lot at IM Louisville. Good block for the sun but the best help was every aid station on the bike and the run I poured water all them. The cooling effect was awesome and invaluable.

I have the Desoto cool wings and they have worked great for me.

I also have some Craft arm coolers that I use during the summer for cycling since jerseys have sleeves already.

One thing to note- The Craft is a thin fabric that dries fairly quickly while the Desoto is more of a mesh and retains water.  That's a good thing since when they're dry they actually keep you warmer, not cooler.

Just received these and they are great.  It's like a mini refrigerator on my arms.  Thanks for the recommendations!

Did a race a couple seasons back out in the desert and it was wicked hot.  After the race was walking down to the lake to cool off, put some more water on them, and the slight breeze actually made me feel cold.

Desoto arm coolers are awesome, but you can still burn through them!  If you are out there for TOO long you will end up with a mesh-looking sunburn...little red dots all over your arms. :D  Still WAY better than full on sunburn!

I don't find that they keep my arms cool so much as they nicely wick up all the sweat so I'm not constantly rubbing my arms on things.  But they also don't make me feel HOT.  So I call it a "neutral" on cooling effect and a big plus on sunburn protection and sweat wicking. :D  Sometimes I will even wear them as "light arm warmers" if the weather isn't *quite* short sleeve weather.

I keep meaning to buy another pair but mine keep on trucking...going on 2.5 years now.  Not quite 'white' anymore, but oh well.  I'll replace them after my year in the desert...

To tag on a question, how well do the arm coolers/LS skincooler products work in high humidity? If the cooling process works by evaporation, and there's sufficient humidity that evaporation doesn't really occur, does that negate the cooling effect? Anyone have experience in high humidity areas?

Thanks

Robin

when I bought them I lived in Florida.  Doesn't get much more humid than that.  Again, even in dry areas I've never really noticed the "cooling" effect, but ESPECIALLY in Florida I LOVED LOVED LOVED that they kept my arms from dripping sweat everywhere....and they don't make me feel hot...so I call it a win...

As others have said, when they are "wet" they sometimes feel the most cool...kind of like how you feel cooler when you get out of water and the breeze is blowing.  So, they do not need to be dry to make you feel cool.

The DeSoto coolers seem to work best when they are kept wet. I would stop at the showers along the beach every 10 miles or so last summer and spray myself with water and it really made a difference on the bike. Not really noticeable running though, especially when its very humid, like in the mornings when there is no evaporation.

I also use sunblock with the arm coolers if I'm out in the middle of the day, but I've never gotten burned either way.

I used Desoto Cool Wings for IMTX in 2011 and they were awesome.  I did have a layer of sunscreen on my arms.  The ONLY sunburn I had from the bike was an exposed strip at my wrist (where the sleeve didn't quite reach my cycling glove).  I was pretty impressed.

I have used arm coolers as well with great success.  I also have used under armour heat gear...long sleeve under a tri top.  They really do protect me from the sun.  I am pretty fair.  I also use bullfrog sunscreen which works very well for me and I sweat much more than average.

DeSoto now makes a tri top with short sleeves. Couple that with some arm coolers and the only sunscreen you'll need will be for your neck and face.
