Swim
  • 15m 26s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming is my absolute worst and I have panicked in both tri's before. I went out backstroke and breastroke until I got around first buoy. Got a little freestyle in in middle section. When I came around last buoy, I was finally calm and was able to get my head under the water while drafting behind another swimmer. I draft along side her until the end of the swim and finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Best swim yet - Need to draft behind a good swimmer earlier so I have to attempt to sight less.
Transition 1
  • 04m 8s
Bike

Everything!!!!
Transition 2

  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Decent run, but I felt like I was just getting warmed up and was ready to run 6 more miles when I finished.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Poured jug of water overmy head and changed out of tri clothes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am still trying to figure that out.

Event comments:

Great race... I was too pissedoff at the end to enjoy anything and just wanted to pick up my toys and go home.

Don't keep beating yourself up over the bike today, Jen. On one tri for me the same thing occured and I felt like I was pedaling with all my heart but going no where. I realized after the race that I had a brake cable jammed and my brakes were rubbing the tires and slowing them down. So you may want to check the bike mechanics. I don't have any other suggestions on what it may be but I'm sorry you're left scratching your head since you trained hard. Look at the positives about the race - you swam well and were able to draft and you were rockin on the run. This was only your second tri and you completed it! Way to go!

From the discussion in the group earlier in the week it could be that your race was impacted by the cold weather and a lower body temp from the swim.  The cold water can affect people in all different kinds of ways and it may be that your muscles were never able to recover from the water quickly enough to have a better bike split.

Brenda could also be onto something with the bike.  It could be that you had some kind of mechanical that caused you to be much slower than usual as well.

Your run split appears to be pretty good.

Take away the positives from this race, not the negatives.

  • You had a better swim split than the last swim
  • You had a faster run split.
It's only going to get better!

Brenda & Dirk-

Thank you! Turns out my front right brake pad was rubbing, which also makes me realize how strong my legs really are, especially to punch out a decent 5k run afterward. I also feel like my bike seat was about an inch too low and never thought that would make such a difference. I am actually looking forward to seeing what I am really capable of on the bike now!

I was cold and I think that should not be dismissed so easily. I think I could have started drafting in the swim earlier, but I am very grateful that I stayed calm in the water, even though Ididn't get anywhere very quickly.

Jen,

I love you too!!!  It was great to see you.  You finished a bike segment with the brakes on the whole time - now that is a real accomplishment.  And wow, you slayed it on the run!  You did great and you'll do even better in Madison.

Jen you did a great job and we all know now that you had an issue with the bike that slowed you down. All part of the learning experience. You did a great job with the swim and had a really strong run had the bike not slowed you down you'd have put up a really good time for this race.
