Hey,

I am looking to do a Mtn biking trip with a buddy of mine in two weeks to Virginia. Does anyone have any suggestions. We are Advanced/Experts and would also like to camp if possible.

I'm not a Mt biker but Carvins Cove seems to popular. Contact the guys at Blackwater Bike Shop. I know they will recommend some good trails.

Not sure where you will be in VA but I'd look at the area west of Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley.

Look through some of the links here.  You can't go wrong if this is the area of the state you are interested in.  There are lots of other great spots in the Commonwealth as well.

agree anything in the shenandoah valley working in and around Harrisonburg on I-81 you got: Elizabeth Furnace, Massanutten, Wolf Gap, North Mountain Shenandoah Traverse all within 1 hour, then you have Douthat further south,

Plus 2 on Carvin's Cove.  I've ridden there several times and it is super versatile and just great terrain.

I believe there may (emphasize may) be a few trails at Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield.  There are some bike trails over at Petersburg Battlefield as well.  Pocahontas charges for parking, I think about $5 last I knew and the battlefield has a fee to enter but once you are in you can ride the trails, or the road for the park as well as go about seeing the battlefield. The park road is a good technical ride even on its own with some good climbs and crazy turns.  We rode the trails a couple of times several years ago, but my family isn't much into cycling like I am.    You could find horseback riding out on the trails in the battlefield, I've been out on the road there several times and seen them.

Check out www.raba.org for mountain biking info.  They might have something posted.

I would concur with the suggestion of the Shenandoah Valley.  There are a huge number of miles of riding and a great deal of diversity.  If you want to camp I would suggest looking at Natural Chimneys Campground in Mt. Solon, VA.  I know it is open now and is very near mountain biking.  If you were coming later you could stay at Todd Lake Campground or North River Campground and bike out the back of your tent.  If you are willing to give up all facilities I believe you can camp in the national forest for free.  You may also want to check Shenandoah Bike Touring company as they rent a lodge in Stokesville that has direct access to the trails.  They also organize a national level 100 mile mountain bike race called the Shenandoah 100.  In this area you would also have access to Staunton and Harrisonburg for restaurants and grocery stores.  If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to message me and I would be happy to help you out.  I am just entering mountain biking (Niner MCR should be being built up right now), but I have many friends that race and ride here all the time and could direct you to various routes.  Good luck!

The Xterra East Championship is held here every year. Weird mix of a riverside trail in the middle of an urban area.
