Total Time = 1h 05m 38s
Overall Rank = 61/364
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/40
Pre-race routine:

Up early. Bagel and banana, small cup of coffee on the way to the race.
Got to race site early. nice to have plenty of time to hang out and check things out. set up transition just how i wanted. got the end of the rack which helped.
Event warmup:

took a short run, stretched short swim. nothing major.
Swim
  • 10m 18s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

bad swim for me. dont know why. wave was a small one and there was not much traffic. i just could not get into a rhythm the whole time. tried breathing every 2 or every 3 strokes. just felt sluggish and slow. navigation was not that great either. maybe i just wanted to go faster. have not swum as much as i want to lately. just got the race off to a bad start.
What would you do differently?:

not sure why i had a bad swim so cant say.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

seemed to take for ever. hard to get shirt on wet body. went sockless which worked fine. should not have been so slow though.
What would you do differently?:

get faster. again, dont know why i was so slow.
Bike
  • 31m
  • 10.2 miles
  • 19.74 mile/hr
Comments:

my seat was not tight enough. did a 50 mile ride last week and it was fine. today, as soon as i got on, the seat bent forward, so i was sitting on a slanted seat and felt like i was constantly slipping off. could not stay ina ero position bcause of this, which slowed me. it was also very ncomfortable. felt i did ok, tried to go harder than normal but was worriedi may have nothing left for the run.
What would you do differently?:

tighten seat. made a difference in my time and speed
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

felt fast.had a hard time with race belt and decided to take Fuelbelt with me as ihave an easier time with that than the water stations.
What would you do differently?:

put race belt on as am running
Run
  • 21m 24s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

started off with slight cramps in both calves. after a minute they felt ok and i soon got into a steady rhythm. managed to gradually pick up the pace as i went along and finished strong, passing 5 people or so in the last 1/2 mile or so.
What would you do differently?:

pickup pace a little more
Post race
Warm down:

wandered by finish to watch John and Michelle finish. walked over to the food and drink and stood around there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not enough sleep. had to work the night before. maybe set myself too high of a target

Nice recovery on the very fast run!  I did this race last year.  I went out way too fast in the swim, crushed the bike course, and died on the run.  However, I really liked this race.

Hey, again sorry I missed the race...stupid work schedule....good race though.   Don't worry about the swim or T1 too much...other races will come.  Use the frustration as motivation for the next one.  Your bike wasn't bad, I mean you were falling off the seat. And your run was great   You should be proud.

Hey Matt,

Great race, despite the bad swim and seat issues during the ride. At least you were able to take a lot away from the race. And, way to have a great run after all those mishaps. Awesome job. I wish I was there cheering you on, and I apologize that I didn't make it to the race.

Good job!!

great job day today Matt, i am sure the bent seat cause a major problem with your bike time... and as we already discovered that swim was WAY longer than a 1/4 mile.  Otherwise great job.
