Subject: Game of Thrones - BOOKS Discussion (Spoilers)
I went ahead and started this thread so we could discuss the books, outside of the thread for the series. I feel bad discussing what is about to come, in a thread with people who are only watching the series.

Here is a great post Big Appa made in the other thread. It's a perfect way to kick off this thread!

Big Appa - 2013-04-03 7:49 AM

--Spoilers—

So I was thinking about the horn of dragons and how the guy who blew the horn burned up from the inside. This made me think that only someone who is immune to fire can blow the horn such as Daenerys. This got me thinking about the “prince that was promised” prophecy about how a man will pull a burning sword out of fire (lightbringer)and they will be the reincarnate of Azor Ahai and they will stop the others. We know Stanis’s lightbringer is not the real deal because it does not give off heat. Now the amount of heat it gives off is not known but since they talk about pulling it out of fire and the sword itself being made of fire I think the prince that was promised is the young Aegon Targaryen. This is still just speculation because they did say that not all Targaryens are immune to fire but I think Aegon will end up calling one of the dragons later on with the horn.

Ok so back to the horn of dragons I was thinking it is one of two horns mentioned that could be the horn of winter the other being the broken war horn Jon snow found with the obsidian pieces at the fist of the first men. While it would make more sense that the war horn is the mythical horn I started to think about how they described what the horn can do. They said it could wake sleeping giants and bring down the wall. This made me think maybe it could be a dragon horn if the sleeping giants was meant to call dragons, the dragons could easily melt down the wall. The only problem with this theory is that you have to be immune to fire to blow the dragon horn so the old broken war horn that Samwell Tarly currently has and is taking to old town could possibly be mended by the master masters.

Really great thoughts Big Appa! I'm certain only Danery's can blow that horn.

I just finished the 5th book. WOW! So much was left HANGING! I can't believe the 6th book isn't out yet! UGH!

My boyfriend's mom is a published author (it is her full time job) and I asked her how books are written. Meaning: Does an author plan it all out ahead of time, or make it up on the fly. I figured when writing the Game of Thrones the author probably had it all planned out ahead of time.

Here is what she said on Facebook:

Many do, Karen--but probably just as many do not. You would think he'd have to plan ahead, but here's a cool quote from George RR Martin (who, coincidentally, I got to hang out with briefly at a conference I co-chaired): "I've always said there are – to oversimplify it – two kinds of writers. There are architects and gardeners.

The architects do blueprints before they drive the first nail, they design the entire house, where the pipes are running, and how many rooms there are going to be, how high the roof will be.

But the gardeners just dig a hole and plant the seed and see what comes up. I think all writers are partly architects and partly gardeners, but they tend to one side or another, and I am definitely more of a gardener. In my Hollywood years when everything does work on outlines, I had to put on my architect's clothes and pretend to be an architect. But my natural inclinations, the way I work, is to give my characters the head and to follow them."~George RR Martin

I thought it was interesting.

Here is a good wiki of the lightbringer that explains Azor Ahai.

 http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Lightbringer

For the old war horn when Ghost took Jon Snow to the cash of obsidian he also found an old cracked war horn that would not make sound. Jon gave the horn to Samwell who kept it on his journey over all other items on his way to old town so I have a feeling it will be of some use either as the horn of winter or having some effect on the others. It would make sense if a member of the nights watch found the horn and hid it with obsidian to keep it safe from the others. It was buried next to the first of the first men which is near the wall so it would be in reach if a brother ever needed it but again this is all just speculation lol

I just finished reading the first book. As it came so highly regarded around here I thought I'd give it a go. Honestly while it was well written, maybe its not my genre and I feel no special urge to read on. Am I wrong ?

If the first book didn't leave you wanting more then I would say it's not for you. Myself I couldn't wait to get to the next book after getting done with one. As a series I would say the 1st book is solid, the 2nd speeds up the story, 3rd is AMAZING IMO and the best so far, 4th gives you a lot of good detail but kind of slow, 5th sped up from the 4th but still left you hanging wanting more.

Nicely put, thanks. Yeah maybe not my genre but not to be totally excluded if I maybe find myself with a lot of extra time on my hands...

If you feel no urge to read on then it probably isn't your genre. I couldn't WAIT to pick up the 2nd book. And I kept reading for 3 months till I finished all 5 books (I don't have a lot of free time to read).

Ha! A Wiki for Game of Thrones! Didn't know there was one.

Ah, got it on the sword. Interesting about the horn. Your theories make sense to me! Sounds reasonable.

Total change of subject, and I'm not 100% sure if I remember everything correctly, but who do you all think the dead guy that led Bran and Hodor around was? Their uncle who got killed? Or just some random Watch person.

I read the books from fall of 2011 through last year when the 5th one came out. I'm thinking I might dig re-reading them again already.

Ah yes! That guy! My friend and I thought maybe it was the Uncle, or possibly the guy that Jon had to kill to show the wildlings he was one of them. I would think the Uncle is the better guess. I wonder if the author will ever route back and tell us. Hum.

Since this author is a "gardener" I wonder if there are some of those story lines he kind of forgot about.

Combine that with the idea that Jon Snow is not Ned's bastard.  Rather he is the son of Rhaegar (Dani's father) and Lyanna (Ned Stark's sister).

Theory or?

Also Daenerys is the daughter of Aeryes II and Rhaegar is her brother. Aegon is the son of Rhaegar.

Fixed it.  Sorry for the ambiguity.  Will Jon will blow the horn?  Is he the "prince that was promised"?  I need to read the books again to keep the names straight..

Cool idea but I will stick with my thory that Aegon will be the "prince that was promised" since he has a great chance to be fire proof and he after all is a prince.

I LOVED it! Thought he kept to the character very well on her fall. Where in Jamie we see redeaming qualities in his fall and how he deals with it in Cersei we see nothing but evil.

Loved it! I was so happy that she finally got caught for all schemes! It was great that she got locked in the tower for so long. Then the naked walk back to the castle. Fabulous! I can't image that anyone reading it felt sorry for her.

Just like Jeoffry getting killed. I mean, who could feel sorry for that a-hole?

OH! Reminds me... who killed him exactly? They all blame it on the Imp, but it wasn't. Wasn't it Margery's grandmother. Something about one of the stones in Sansa's hair net being poisoned. Right? But WHY did she do it again? She seems like an unlikely character to want to kill Jeoffry. I kind of forgot why.

Also, who was Lyanna Stark again? Was she the one that got killed by Lord Balish/Littlefinger? Or someone else? I'm reading the Epilogue at the end of book 5 and Rhaegar looking twice at Lyanna Stark is mentioned.

I liked how the author had Jamie's character grow into someone more honorable. I hate that his hand got cut off. But it probably made him a better person in the end.

I thought it was interesting.

That was awesome Karen. Thanks for that.

I always suspected he was not one who wrote the end and worked his way back.  Tolkien definitely was an architect.

I was shocked by the Red Wedding.

I think the Red Wedding will not be the end of this season.  I think it'll be Joffrey's wedding and Sansa's escape.

Think back to Jamie and Tyrion's conversation at Winterfell about Bran.  Jamie said "Give me a good clean death over being a cripple any day."

Tyrion's response was "Speaking for the grotesque, death is so absolutely final whereas life... It's full of possibilities..."

If Jamie hadn't lost his hand he would still be the pompous fool he was throughout the first books.

Interestingly enough on Jamie.  He never really won an actual sword fight with anyone in the story.  He was beaten by Ned Stark until the guard stabbed him in the leg, he didn't compete in the tourney where he became a member of the King's Guard, he loses to Brienne...

That doesn't jibe with Ned letting him take the black, with the focus on hair color of Joffrey vs. Gendry/Jaime vs. Robert Baratheon, and the whole Maester Aegon not knowing about it.

Ned wouldn't have let him take the black if he was an heir.  He would've taken him to King's Landing.

Lady Tyrell also known as the queen of thorns learned from Sansa Stark that Jeoffry was evil so she killed him to let her daughter Margarey marry Joeffrys little brother Tommen so she could stay the queen. Tommen is known to be a good kid and being younger Margarey could manipulate him farily easy.
